I'm a real novice and would appreciate some opinions. I'm want to buy an SLR type camera I know that megapixels and zoom are not the only important qualities but don't know what are the other key things to look for. I've done some research and come down to three options of SLR type cameras in my tight budget.

Which camera would you recommend Pentax X90 (12MP, 26xzoom), Fuji Finepx S1800 or S2500 (both 12MP, 18x zoom) or for a bit more money Nikon Coolpix P100 (10MP, 26x zoom). If you can't comment on these but can say what features to look for that would be helpful too. TIA.

OP here, just to add I know these are not true SLR cameras as those would cost a lot morehave budgeted for a camera at this time. So perhaps I should say that I'm just looking for a step above point and shoot cameras. Thanks.

Autofocus maybe?

I would look for the least amount of shutter delay possible. I think the Panasonic Lumix line is very good.

I have a lumix and I don't love it. Though ours was about $200 and I'm comparing it to my last point and shoot, which was the Canon G line that runs about $500. Highly recommend the G11 if you can swing it. It's fast and super clear - many of my pro friends use it as their point and shoot when they can't or don't want to lug around a dslr.
