Best time to seed lawn in the Fall?

When this fall do you think is a good time to throw down grass seed?

Theoretically around grass tillering time at the equinox. But I was tempted this week with all the cool damp.
Are you overseeding or patching? Don't forget to water. If you won't water, throw it down in December and let the snow soak it in and it will sprout in spring.

Should you sprinkle a light layer of topsoil on existing grass before you seed?

I put the seed down late September. It will sprout when conditions are right, which might not be immediately.

People have all these strict rules.....just do it when you have time. Anytime between mid sept to mid october is probably fine. Its just grass. 99% of people aren't trying to make a golf.course.
