Stuart or Hines?

Anonymous
I recently moved back to DC after some years away.
I remember Stuart being a good school but I’ve been told it’s very gentrified now. I had a family member removed her daughter due to racism in the area. They now go to E-Hine. I researched E-Hine and hear that’s it’s definitely on the up and up and overall good school too.

I’m on the waitlist for both (8th grade) so I’m just fishing for personal experiences in case I we get pulled and I need to make a decision.

SH is a bit more gentrified than EH, but I think only to its benefit (e.g., larger cohort of on grade level + students, more PTO $$$). It's still a T1 that is 76% AA v 17% white, so the idea that it's all rich white people/a bastion of racism strikes me as a bit crazy.

Well she had her daughter experienced in the area when leaving school, not necessarily in the school itself

You won't be on a wait list if you move into the neighborhood of one of them.

I don't want to discount her experience, but I definitely wouldn't avoid SH because one kid experienced racism outside of the school. SH is pretty public transport accessible (very close to Union Station in addition to buses), so it's not like your kid would need to have very much interaction with the immediate community.

SH is 3/4 black and 30% at risk making it one of the more racially and socioeconomically diverse schools in the city. It is a reasonably popular choice for middle school. The surrounding neighborhood is gentrified and fairly wealthy but the surrounding neighborhood/businesses pretty much dislikes middle schoolers citywide deal hardy doesnt matter.

If you actually have both schools as an option, they are about the same distance from you, and you are not coming from the feeder pattern for either of them, then I would probably choose SH. But I would not first start at EH and then switch to SH or commute lots further to SH. These schools are overall really similar with valid reasons to choose either one over the other.

Both are close to my job so the commute wouldn’t be an issue with them. I’m leaning towards EH because she has family there already and that sense of familiarity may be comforting with the transition to a new area. But education is also very important and, outside of my cousins personal experience, I hear great things about SH too.
I’m #2 for EH, & #9 for SH on the waitlist.

You heard Stuart Hobson is racist? Ok. At either EH or SH there is a cohort of white kids and white parents who are not demographically or culturally different from each other. If “racist” to you means “white kids with white parents active in the school,” you will find it both places.
