DD scheduled to take SAT this weekend - Is College Board requiring MCPS students to use school-issued computers?

Anonymous
DD is registered to take the SAT this Saturday.

Today we got some strange notice in her College Board account saying that, "If you are current NCPS [sic] student and if you have a school issues chromebook please bring that device for the test."

For others in this situation, do you read this as a request or as a requirement?

DD already verified her registration on a different, non-school-issued laptop that she prefers to her school chromebook. Her private laptop has a bigger screen than the school-issued one.

We want her to be able to use her own laptop, but are worried she might be turned away if she turns up to the testing site with it rather than the school-issued one.

Thoughts?

They're going to monitor remotely, do you want to grant access to a personal device

Thanks. It's a new laptop, so if they want to monitor remotely that would be fine with me.

What are private school students going to use? Why should they have more freedom to choose a device than MCPS students do?

It's probably because they KNOW all MCPS devices will be compatible with the app they need. They may not have extra devices to issue to students or a limited amount.

Why can't we just follow instructions.

If you're afraid of being turned away just follow the instructions. MCPS Student? Check. School issued device? Check. Looks like this specific direction applies to you.

Because the instructions from the College Board -- for months -- have been that you can use any number of devices, the school-issued computer being just one, on which to take the SAT test. They encouraged you to register and verify your information, and download the BlueBook software used to take the test, weeks ahead of the test date -- which we did. Now, 48 hours before the test, this weird notice about using an MCPS-issued computer comes through the College Board portal.

So we followed the specific directions, thanks. Now someone appears to be changing the directions at the last minute. We have a call into the College Board.

So sending out a message TWO days before a test is OK? Was it a requirement or a request as a PP asked?

It probably has more to do with helping ensure that the device will work in the school building.

It must have to do with being in an MCPS building. My kid took it Sunday and never received any such notice but was at a private school building (though an MCPS student).

To those snarkily saying she should just follow the directions, kids do practice tests on their preferred computer. Changing it up at the last minute would be stressful and could potentially slow them down on a high stakes timed test. Plus, if you've already checked in on your preferred computer, you're quite possibly going to mess things up more by trying to check in again on a different computer.

OP-- curious if you learned anything (for those with kids in mcps buildings in the next round of testing).
