Rowing for Homeschoolers

Anonymous
My daughter recently decided to take up rowing with a local row program but they don't offer Row in the spring. Does anyone know if there are any public schools or private schools that will allow a homeschooler to row with their school? We are in Fairfax County.

Blair HS in MCPS welcomes homeschoolers. They launch at Bladensburg Park in DC, I believe.

Vhsl/vasra/Sraa rules limit boats to all being from the same school. But there are club rowing programs that row in the spring including TBC on the Potomac.

I assume you have to be in bounds for Blair.

I don't believe so, but maybe a montgomery county resident? Worth a call to find out or get leads for a similar program in Va.

The rowing governing bodies are actually very strict these days because some HS rowing teams were creating super teams with kids that didn’t attend the school.

Walls used to be able to row on the JR team because they don’t have a team, but that was nixed.

You would be shocked at what some sports parents will do for an edge. Riverdale Baptist in PG used to have the #1 HS baseball team in the country because they allowed homeschoolers to play no matter where they lived. You then saw a bunch of top players decide to homeschool and play for them…even though there was little to zero schooling occurring.

That was stopped and now Riverdale Baptist isn’t even a top 30 team in the DMV.

Get a home rowing machine or join a facility that has them, to stay in shape year round.
