504 / IEP adviser for private school?

Anonymous
Hi - looking for recommendations for an attorney or educational consultant who can help me communicate with DD’s new school about a 504 plan and/or IEP.

DD is (recently) medically-complex and out of school a lot. Her charter couldn’t accommodate her last year & we are going private this year. We ran into trouble with the charter because I didn’t know anything about 504 plans & support for sick kids.

I want to start off on the right foot with the new private school – with good communication & a good understanding of what supports we reasonably can ask for.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations for advisors, counselors, or consultants who do this kind of work – – and if you have personal experiences to share, I would love to hear what worked for you!

Thanks in advance!

Private schools aren’t covered under IEP/504, justADA, unless we’re talking public funded private in which case the public school is still in charge of the IEP. In any case you might look here for the consultant- there’s a page up top labeled yellow pages for kids.

None of the advocates I know know anything about private schools.

If you applied/accepted to a private school without disclosing her needs/discussing accommodations, the school is going to be irritated. But all you can do is have a conversation about her needs and the various ways she could be accommodated. Private schools have minimal requirements for accommodations, so you have to work with them collaboratively.
