My daughter (6) was flagged by her school at the end of the year for ADHD/attention issues.
We are considering whether we need to do expensive neuropsych evaluation (wait lists are months long, at least for the places her pediatrician recommended). In the meantime, I would like to get as many actionable strategies in place as I can — what have the most helpful books been in understanding your ADHD (attentive, not hyperactive) kid? She’s not disruptive in class, but she is often in her own world/not on task. She DEFINITELY is a deeply feeling kid- so we are deep in the highly sensitive child books already, but could use help around executive function and focus |
I don't have any book recs but do have suggestions for other info sources that might be useful. There's a lot of helpful info on the ADD magazine website. In addition to a variety of free articles, they offer free webinars on various topics and occasionally have free material you can download (like checklists). There are also podcasts for parents with kids who have ADHD, although those can be hit or miss. I like the Calm Parenting podcast for guidance on emotional dysregulation/deeply feeling issues.
If your child is diagnosed with ADHD, there is a great workbook for kids called Thriving with ADHD. For what it's worth, I'd absolutely do the neuropsych evaluation so that you understand whether it's truly ADHD. Having the evaluation will also help you get accommodations at school that will help her stay on task. |
I've got an inattentive daughter and a mixed son. We loved...
Good inside by Dr Becky Took in person course but there is a book and online videos of Dr Dan shapiro, the parent child journey. Highly highly suggest this!!!!! Late, lost, and unprepared. Rec by our neuropsych and was good. Haven't read ADHD in girls but heard that was a good one. Best of luck!!! |
How to ADHD is a great YouTube channel with how it can present in girls. |
Orchid kids class
Skolniks gifted and distractible Do not recommend the holderness book. |
I really liked 'Scattered Minds,' it's a bit of a different take on ADHD, by a medical doctor who had a late diagnosis. |
ADHD AND ME was a great book, my 17 year old daughter love it when she was 8ish |
For kids this is a great book.
