| I'm interested in from parents who have reclassed their child in a MCPS middle school -- coming from a private school. My child would be repeating 8th grade. Thank you for any insights! |
| What’s a recluse’s |
Even Apple doesn’t know and autocorrects reclass |
| I assume he was struggling and you decided to repeat when switching to public? Does MCPS allow that just on parents preferences? |
| Unless for sports, it’s less common in MCPS for kids to be held back. Not a big deal though, no one cares if someone way older. |
|
The only way this works in MCPS is with an under age child in grades k and 1.
Otherwise, you can repeat a grade in private. MCPS didn’t care that DS was a very young 13 at the start of 9th. |

As one can see from the responses, reclass is not really a word that public schools use.
OP - you are going to have to share more information to get a good answer, because this is extremely uncommon in a public school context. Some kids start kindergarten late, or in rare cases repeat a grade in early elementary, but holding a kid back in Middle School basically never happens. If you have a specific reason, you might get better answers. |
| NO! Don't hold your kid back. If they are struggling, get them tutoring and/or therapies and a good evaluation for an IEP. |

Do you mean holding your child back/repeating a grade? Is "reclass" some trendy term that's supposed to sound better than those phrases?
Why are you looking to do this? Is your child failing? |
| Public schools don't typically recluse students unless severely behind or underage for the grade and requested. |
| This is up to principal discretion from 3rd grade on. (Before that it is not possible.) |
A young 13 starting HS? Why? I know if they have a sept/oct bday you can send early. But why would you send a summer birthday a year early. My young 13yo is just going to be starting 8th, not 9th. To answer OP. I don’t think they care but it might depend on their birthday. |
+1. Redshirting is a rich kid thing. Far less common in public schools. You can call and ask-although I would wonder why they would gift a kid a second year of 8th grade when it’s public school tax dollars. |
Did they fail 8th grade at the private? |
Reclass is a private school term, and not unusual in that world. It's much more common for private school kids to be redshirted, which pushes the entire age of the class upward (particularly for boys). So if you are transferring in with a boy who started K on time, he might be very young for the cohort and they might request that you have the child enter at their current grade, repeating a year, putting them in the middle of the age range, and earning themselves another year of tuition. |
