Better to leave a fail for a pass/fail class on transcript, or get letter from therapist about how mental health issues

affected executive functioning that week?

both seem like crappy choices, but which is slightly less so? Intro class for major/career choice.

Basically, dc's first college class (taken online over summer, before starting as freshman - they thought a major assignment deadline was a day later than it was. Which means an automatic zero on the assignment. According to dc's calculations, this will give them a failing grade. Took class pass/fail, so won't affect gpa, but will forever be on the transcript.

tia for your honest feedback.

^Should've added prof only gives leeway with written note by medical professional. Don't know if mental health professional even counts.

Couch it as a good lesson to learn. Re-take the class.

Try to do what you can to get the fail off the transcript.

Hate an executive function coach for your son.

*hire.

And make sure your kid understands he CANNOT do this in college. He HAS to turn things in on time. This isnt public high school which is often very slack.

I know! I am kind of glad this happened, because now I think he might actually listen to me about getting help. But how do we get the fail off the trasncript? We wouldnt even know where to start. In this case, some mental health struggles really did lead to this, but I don't think it's wise to advertise to the dept he's planning a career in about mental health stuff? but is that better than a fail on a transcript?

So don't tell them about the mental health stuff? Just leave the fail on the transcript?

Is it for sure a fail?? Did he talk to the professor?? If not that’s the first thing to do.

Most required prerequisite classes cannot be taken pass/fail.

If his grade was so close to failing that one missed assignment brought him to an F, he doesn’t have a good grasp of intro material for his intended major, which is a significant issue even if the school does allow prerequisites to be pass/fail.

I’d suggest retaking the class or rethinking the major.

A fail on the freshman year transcript isn’t going to be a big deal. Most employers don’t ask for a transcript.

More concerning that he failed an intro level class in his intended major. He may have to retake the class anyway if the school requires it.

He got an 85 on the first essay. This is the second, which will now be a 0. Then there;s a 3rd. Thats 75% of the grade, There are weekly quizzes, for a total of 10% of the grade, which he's gotten b/w 75-90% on. Then participation points on an online forum, which I assume he's been doing. I'm trying to figure out the math on this, maybe he's confused about the calculation, he's never been a math person. And frankly I'm not sure how to calculate it either. I'll recheck tomorrow. I think he needs 70% in the class for a fail. This isn't his declared major, but he was planning a minor, if not double major in this class. he always does things on a whim without thinking it through, i didn't know he was taking this pass/fail. He's smart, but does these crazy things which make a mess of things and I can't reel him in.

And I'm most concerned, I guess, about internships and grad school. The career field really needs a masters.
