What majors are safe?

We know how bad the job market is for new college grads these days. What are some of the college majors that you think will be in demand in the future? Does anyone have a new college grad who found a job right away? What did they major in?

Vocational stuff.

There are no safe majors now. There are successful strategies using various majors, but the days when a given field of study yielded guaranteed income are over.

I have an engineering student who seems to have it very easy with high paying internships. I also have an econ major who really needed to hustle to get things going. All good, but really needed to rely on networking. Both go to very good schools.

How many adults do you know who got a good job right out of college, without a grad degree? I know almost none. The people I know without grad degrees started in really low-level jobs where any major would have been fine.

Major matters very little at top schools.
Every one of DC’s 2025 eleven close friends from their top10 has a job or grad/law/med. majors include english, classics, double math and french, history, biology. Not one got a job through parents or family all were related to internship, professor connection or campus recruiting. Grad and professional school of course is highly recommendation and research based. This school is on all target lists and has very high grad /law /med matriculation of course which helps a lot. High school friends from other colleges did not do as well but more than 75% have a job or grad plans.
The best plan in a down market is go to the most successful outcome schools for all Majors

My DS got a good job at an advertising company a few years ago right out of college. He paid off his student loans and is now saving $$ for a down payment for a home. No grad degree.

Interesting that most of our interns and new hires all have parents or connections to our company. Seems like that's how kids are getting jobs these days.

Myself and most of the people I know?

I started in banking and just kept getting promoted…friend went to a boutique consulting firm (that paid well) that became a major firm and rose to global managing partner…another started in the strategy group of a large healthcare firm and rose to CEO.

We all started at good to great compensation.
