It will be out first time doing tent camping for 4pp as a cub scout activity. We have to bring tent, sleeping bags, and what else I should get? We have nothing, and it will be out first tent camping 3 days 2 nights. They told me that sleeping area may flood ( like wet floor, not river flood) if it rains.....omg. There will be no electricity, but there are running water and flushable toilets. There will be no shower. Good thing that we don't have to bring food and drink and I assume the pack leaders take care of them.
Is that fun or not that fun? Should we do 3 days 2 nights (Friday to Sunday) or 2 days 1 night (Saturday to Sunday or Friday to Saturday)? I wonder what kids could do. Can someone give me a list that I need buy. |
We love that sort of thing. Bring a tarp to set your tent on. I like having a lantern but you can get by with flashlights. You really don’t need much if you don’t need to deal with food and there are no showers. |
Put a tarp under the tent. Get a small battery to charge things or charge in the car. |
They haven't given you a camping list? Here's one from REI
https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/family-camping-checklist.html What's 4pp? |
Bring plastic bags for wet or dirty clothes.
Bring flashlignts or lantern. Pillows. You may want a camp mat to put under your sleeping bag. |
Tarp under the tent will keep you dry in the tent
Sleeping matt (foam) or air mattress (bring pump you can plug into the car to blow them up if you go this route) Sweatshirts (might be cool at night) Assuming they gave you a food list? I would do bagels or muffins for breakfast along with cut up fruit, sandwiches for lunch with peaches or plums, and make dinner awesome! Ribs (buy cooked and throw them on a grid to heat), burgers (buy a sleeve at Costco, already made), steak, buy potatoes and oil and salt, wrap in foil and throw in the fire, bring shredded cheddar, sour cream, etc. for toppings, and salad or grilled veggies, if they won't go for that, fresh corn on the cob. Absolutely SMORES for dessert |
Make sure you know how to secure your rainfly correctly on your tent. That will help a lot of it’s raining/windy.
Like others suggested, lay a tarp down, and get a camp mattress pad. They have some small blowup/inflatable pads. I also suggest adding another between the ground and the camp pad. Honesty, car sunshades work great for this. I would also get a smallish plastic container shoe box for a place to put shoes. Shoes somehow get separated in our tent, it’s so frustrating looking for a single shoe in the middle of the night when going to the bathroom. It will help to keep them dry too. https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/cabelas-collapsible-lantern-or-spotlight?hvarAID=shopping_googleproductextensions&ds_e=GOOGLE&ds_c=BPS%7CShopping%7CPMax%7CProprietary%7CGeneral%7CNCO%7CGoogle%7CNMT&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21743868700&gbraid=0AAAAAD1Tgtc-_poVOcSEBtpWcFDjy5TDH&gclid=CjwKCAjwvuLDBhAOEiwAPtF0VgVfHmgiUnJuuu5N5PuQhCoEBXcWjO8tyowgOTihPSV2kl0AINkorBoCveYQAvD_BwE We have these lanterns/flashlights and we love them! We each have our own and are so handy. I would bring a book, in case there is some downtime for you. Get some extra battery packs. Dude wipes are handy if you feel like you need a quick clean up. We also each have a small desk fan that is powered by a USB cord. If it’s going to be HOT it’s a nice item to have. It doesn’t cool the whole tent but it keeps air circulating near your face. If you’re not a camper, have an “escape plan”.We did that the first few times we went camping. We would always plan for staying the max number of days with the understanding that we might need to leave early depending how prepared we were and how the kids were doing. We had to leave early one time because we weren’t prepared for the weather. But the kids could have stayed longer if we let them. Most kids love camping and just being outside with their friends. |
My scouts usually brought battery powered fan in the summer. Agree about lantern, in addition to flash lights. Bug spray (though our troop always brought communal bug spray and suntan lotion for everyone, might want to check).
An optional thing on our troop list was camp chair, but my boys and the adults always really liked having them. Hand towel was always nice. For just brushing teeth or washinging hands. |
Most scout troops do all communal food and wouldn't have people making individual family meals. Don't be tempted to bring snacks. Don't keep food in your tent! |
Flashlights for walking around
Little battery lantern for inside the tent and a little hook to hang it with Ponchos Plenty of dry clothes and dry socks Rain boots Plastic bags for wet clothes |
And yes the kids will love it. |
Op here. Thank you for advices. Any link for 4pp tent and sleeping bags recommendations? My friend tells me that I can borrow their 2pp tent, but I doubt that it maybe tight. We have a boy and a girl, and I don't mind buying bigger sizes to last longer for sleeping bags. |
Kids will love it, bug spray, head lamps, "comfy pillow" & advil PM for you...trust me! |
Yes, buy a normal sized one. They grow out of them fast. |
