Real Talk - Bulletproof Backpack Inserts?

Anonymous
Several neighbors with rising Kindergartners in are electing to buy bulletproof inserts for their kids. I get where it’s coming from, but is this the norm now? I can’t tell if this is just the thin slice of who I’ve met, or if I’m the crazy one not wanting to subject my young kid to an extra 3-6 pounds of weight based on the *chance* there’s a MoCo school shooting.

The reality is that at every elementary school where children have been shot, most kids were saved by following the directions of their teachers.

Kids don’t wear their backpacks all day, and encouraging your kid to separate from the group to retrieve it puts them and every other child at risk.

HS and MS I could maybe see this but in Kindergarten it’s a sign you care more about performative parenting than about your kid’s safety.

For it to stop anything, your child will most likely not be able to lift it. And your child must be able to have it on them. That could keep them from running away effectively. And, the most grim thought, it would not help the shooter targets execution style.

I have a wear and carry permit so I'm far from being anti-gun. But IMHO only gun laws and effective enforcement will make a difference.

Nowadays many schools do not permit backpacks.

They don't have stuff to carry anymore now that students are barely using textbooks and pen and paper. They are just carrying a chromebook from classroom to classroom

Kindergarteners at your school are carrying a chromebook from classroom to classroom?

I don't have elementary schoolers any more, but I see the ones in my neighborhood still carrying backpacks. My kids in Kindergarten weren't carrying textbooks, they were carrying lunch boxes and gloves to wear at recess if it was cold, and library books.

Yea no. This is a gimmick. School shootings are horrible but are incredibly rare. Kids have a much greater chance of getting harmed in a car or walking across the street.

No it’s not the norm to answer your question OP.

My apologies. I was speaking from my experience from teaching middle schoolers. They aren't allowed to carry backpacks. As for elementary school kids, their backpacks go in their cubby or storage room at the beginning of the day so it seems pointless to throw bulletproof inserts in them unless everything is happening in the first or last 5 minutes of the day

If they are hiding there will be no time for getting a backpack so better off getting a vest and helmet.

It depends on the school. It varies by school. Mine always carried their backpacks, no lockers.

It would make more sense to require your kids to wear helmets on the playground. (To avoid confusion: I do NOT think they should wear helmets on the playground or have bulletproof backpacks. Neither would have any real benefit.)

Statistically, kids die when they get hit by cars or drown. Keep your young kids away from water and make sure your older kids can swim. And make them hyperaware of the risk of cars.
