Are they typically men or women?
Any #s out there reporting this? Who are the people reading kids' essays and judging them into a pile in less than 10 minutes? What are their qualifications usually? |
It’s depends on the school. You can view their profiles for the school you are applying to. For example, here is Amherst: https://www.amherst.edu/admission/staff |
They are young! Usually a few years out of college themselves |
Young? Huh? No. Some are bald. These pictures are not even current, they are pictures several years back at least. |
I think at my state school grad students do essay review for a 2nd job. |
What's the retention rate ![]() |
Wut |
What are you even talking about. Most admissions reps are young. They’re the first to read applications. Offices have a handful of senior level officers, and a team of young regional reps. |
So a bachelor's degree is a minimum ?? |
DP, but I’m pretty sure the person you’re responding to was not talking about the Amherst link specifically but about application readers and AO staff in general. Yes, a lot of them are young. Often they are recent grads of the school they are working for. |
A lot of the males double as coaches at slacs |
Exactly! Research and find the regional people for your top reach schools! Mostly women. Liberals arts majors. Young. |
Even at slacs, most coaching is a full time job. Do you have specific examples of AOs being coaches? |
Mostly young, tend to be female, looking for tuition assistance for grad degrees, etc. A few old hands around to make the handful of tough decisions.
Of course there are some who just can’t leave the bubble and become lifers. One of those jobs where AI will take over in 5 or 10 years. That way schools can process applications 24 x 7. They will keep a few people around to keep up the illusion with school visits and to answer questions when tours end. |
Like most industries, the men tend to be at the top with dozens of women doing the day to day. |
