How do parents deal with the heat

Anonymous
I am basically catatonic the rest of the day after these super hot Sat morning swim meets. On Tuesdays I can barely get out of bed. How are other parents not only surviving this heat but it seems like you really enjoy the meets?! I can’t believe some parents do this for like 15 years if you have multiple kids. Are there tricks to surviving the heat or maybe I’m just a wuss.

They are sneaking in beer

I have no suggestions, but I can totally relate! I took a 2 hour nap after this morning’s meet. I was exhausted!

I fainted at ours, so I’m clearly not doing it right!

As someone who passes out when she overheats, can I give you some tips?
1. Sit in shade
2. Continuously hydrate (sip water)
3. Sunglasses
4. Wet a washcloth and put it in the freezer, then bring it with you in a ziplock baggie to put around your neck - if you've brought water, you can re-wet it easily.
5. Your body gives you a signal or two before you pass out - for me, I all of a sudden can't see despite my eyes being open and everything sounds like it's underwater - learn what your body's signals are, and how much of a warning that is to get somewhere safe where you won't hit your head. I have about five seconds and I sit down wherever I am, and try to tell someone, anyone, "I'm passing out."

Lots of parents on our team have small personal fans they either hold or wear around their necks. Regardless today was brutal!

After this morning’s meet I took a cold-ish shower and then an hour long nap and then I felt wonderful.

Hat, Sunscreen, Gatorade, sunglasses.

Prevent burn, dehydration and squinting

It's pretty funny that you can do it included someone talking about how they passed oit a lot - that seems sort of messed up to normalize no?

Shade, big hat, cooking towel, ice water and cold watermelon.

Your child’s actually swimming is over in minutes. Stay in the shade until his/her event.

Shade and way more liquid than you think you need. It also takes getting used to- by this point in the season I’m fine, it’s only the beginning that I feel bad. Honestly, I go to all the swim team things, and the main upside to that is being acclimated to the heat sooner

If you're not volunteering, there's no need to be there. Stay home. Or maybe if you were working the meet, you wouldn't be so focused on being hot. Drink a lot of water and wear a hat. It's not that deep.

Every swim team has volunteer requirements.
People working the jobs can't do this.

Make sure you’re getting salts when you’re hydrating.
