My DD pulled out of AOS earlier this school year for similar reasons (didn't realize going in that the majority of her time would be spent in physics, which is unrelated to what she wants to pursue). Initiating was easy, she emailed her counselors at the Academies and her base school, paperwork was filled out, and she went back to her base school within a week. She pulled out early enough that her grades didn't transfer over, but knows others who left after one/two years and they were able to transfer over some credits (math was the biggest issue with transferring over since its integrated). She's a lot happier at the base school, while her friends at the Academies are constantly stressed out (and their classes have the same weight.)
