Sports question - under new guidance can girls play on a boys team?

Anonymous
Is this permissible under the new Federal guidance? My son's fall sport really needs additional players, and would be open to having girls join to fill the team sufficiently to field it. It has nothing to do with transgender issues, they just need more players and it is a non contact sport.

IME many years ago it depended on the sport and the league. For example, the JV baseball team was a few players short so a few girls played.

Which sport?

And which district or jurisdiction?

Before covid, my local MCPS high school recruited the girl's soccer goalie as a kicker on the football team, and had boys on the cheerleading team. In both cases there wasn't a team of the opposite sex (e.g. there wasn't a girls football team, or a boys cheerleading team). I think I heard that that ws why it was allowable, but I am not sure.

I'm not sure what you mean new Federal guidance? In general Boys is the "open" division for anyone and Girls is restricted. Nothing stopping girls from playing on most boys teams other than safety in certain sports.

Girls are already allowed on many FCPS high school teams, they just don't generally make it, whether that's because of bias by coaches or skill - not sure. I know our baseball team is technically co-ed, and I know a couple girls who tried out who didn't make it. Football, I think, is also open to girls, though I haven't seen any play at our high school. I think any team that doesn't have a separate girls team is open to girls. I wonder if it's the same in reverse? Like can boys technically play girls field hockey? Probably not.

Was it B-CC? I had the former soccer goalie/kicker as my trainer during the pandemic.

I remember when I was in HS many moons ago we had a male join the Girl's Field Hockey Team, and a girl on the Wrestling team and Football Team.

This was 1999-2000

Depends on the sport. Some sports SHOULD NOT allow girls, as they can be seriously injured.

Too much of an insurance and legal liability in many contact sports.

Don’t think they could restrict it to certain sports. If it is open all sports are open.

My son’s rugby team has girls and it’s the best thing. We should have more mixed sports - at least up until high school, the girls tend to be faster and stronger and more mature.

Really raised the level of play, maturity, teamwork.

Even pre-puberty, there's a slight physical differential, and that differential favors boys. And afterwards... the 200 meter record for 17-18 year old girls is 23.24 seconds, just a bit faster than the 23.37 second record for 11-12 year old boys.

Useful data can be found here https://www.usatf.org/resources/statistics/records/championship-meet-records/usatf-national-junior-olympic-track-field-champion or by looking at the grip strength differentials here https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/4vcxd0/almost_all_men_are_stronger_than_almost_all_women/

I've heard the women's national soccer team loses against regional U-15 boy's soccer teams, but is relatively on par with U-14, for what it's worth.
