Books/reading for 15 year old girls

Anonymous
I would like to see my daughter read books this summer. She is intelligent and high achieving and I want her to be able to relax this summer, but also spend time looking at books instead of her phone. She’s already exercising/playing sports a great deal so I would like her to do something calming. She says reading is boring and nobody her age reads books. Are your teens reading books? If so, and recommendations for books? Anything I recommend is quickly rejected. Not necessarily looking for anything super intellectual or academic. Just fun and engaging. Something that might foster a love in reading that existed in elementary school and seems to have gotten lost.

What sort of stories did she read in elementary? What sort of movies/TV shows does she enjoy now?

Drop her off at the library and tell her to not come out until she's found two books she wants to read. She is not going to take any of your suggestions.

At 15, you are not going to suddenly convert her to be a reader. You might suggest audio books that she can listen to when she works out. This could be the gateway into actually reading books.
Graphic novels are also a nice entry into reading regularly.

As for her argument about kids not reading, I have one teen who is not a big reader and one who is voracious. The one whondoesn'tnread much likes graphic novels. The voracious reader likes dystopia fantasy.

I have one teen who reads a ton and one who doesn’t read at all. I have tried to encourage the one who doesn’t read but it’s not something I can force.

Try rewarding minutes spent reading if it’s that important to you. I’m not there yet.

Definitely have her read 1984. It is more relevant in 2025 than ever before.

I like 1984 but I wouldn't have a 15 year old who isn't reading try to tackle that one.

Given how big BookTok is I don't buy the whole "teens aren't reading" thing.

To be honest I'd buy her a YA Romance that's trending on TikTok. Something like The Love Hypothesis or The Hating Game.

Huge NO WAY! to anything TikTok !!

It’s completely toxic.

My 15 yo is reading this summer, but he goes stretches during the school year not reading books (unless they’re for school).
However, he mostly reads stuff like Star Wars books and The Hunger Games. Not edifying literature.

I agree with the idea of taking her to the library. Or, see if there are any books that tie in with movies or shows she enjoys. Bribery can help, too.

My teen is a little bit younger, but all her friends are big into Romantasy. She's not as much, but some crossover books that her friends have enjoyed and she also enjoys include:

- The False Prince
- Ranger's Apprentice
- anything Marissa Meyer

For a 15 year old who wants a fast paced, plot driven read I'd also throw in The Inheritance Games.

Second the idea of audiobooks. If OP really wants to force it, what about a bedtime read-aloud? I know teens who still get them.

What about Crazy Rich Asians?

What kind of TV shows does she watch? Use that to find an in.

YA Romance is all mine wants to read. She just finished The Selection series.

That was SUCH a great book, and a great movie. So excited for the next movie to come out.

Anything in Reese's or Jenna's book club is probably fine. Many are light psuedo-chic lit, which I don't always love, but makes for easy reading.

There are HUGE selections of YA novels too. I enjoy reading these, even as an adult.

I wouldn't worry about things being trashy. I read all of Christopher Pike's sexy mystery books in the 6th grade. All full of teenage making out and murder. They are probably super dated though for modern teens.
