Is teaching a “hobby” job?

We all know teachers don’t make much, so between the low pay and summers off, is that enough to constitute a “hobby” job?

What an extremely offensive question.

Jesus. A hobby job is making jewelry on Etsy

Tell me you only know rich people without telling me you only know rich people.

Is this post real? I think teachers make more than you think, OP.

It's a normal middle class job with a perk of getting summers off (and a lot of downsides).

No, it’s a profession.

My neighbor who works part time doing holiday planters has a hobby job. My other neighbor who is a science teacher at a middle school has a professional job.

Starting salaries are $50k and max out around $100 after a lot of years. Full time retail is really not any better compared to the low end of the teacher scale.

I am jealous that teachers get summers and all holidays off, but I wouldn't ever want to be in that profession.

Why?

It is not a hobby job, it's a profession. Just like nursing is a profession even though you can arrange your hours in many different ways.

But the low pay means most (not all) have a higher earning spouse and therefore a threshold where they can or must quit rather than deal with a too-high level of BS. Low pay / higher earning spouse is why so many teachers quit during covid.

My 87 year old ballet teacher thinks so. Dude qualified for social security 2 decades ago 🙂
