Anyone retired and moved overseas?

Specifically, to Greece?

We have a few years before we would do this, so we’re in the planning phase. Resources/links welcome

Greece is very hot in the summer. Think carefully about that.

You'll get better answers on expat forums and facebook/instagram groups for retirees in Greece.

and all those islands!

A cousin did this - retired to Rhodes, but also spends time in Crete. As mentioned earlier, it does get hot, and island fever is a thing. However, the food and friendliness is there and it’s generally affordable if you watch your budget.

I totally want to retire to a Greek island. I will just watch The Durrells in Corfu and dream, as that is 20 years off….

The books are fantastic too.

Op here. We’re actually thinking of doing this part-time and maintaining some sort of residence in the states. Just not sure how to work it all yet.

Also suggest FB groups. There is most likely an Americans in Greece group just like there is an Americans in France group. That one gets endless questions from Americans not yet living in France but who want to move there. They get lots of very helpful answers from Americans who have already made the move.

Isn't greece a fairly unstable country?

After watching the Durrells in Corfu a few years back, I would love to spend a year there.

Physical beauty and political and economic stability are not the same thing. Physical beauty also doesn't necessarily mean that immigrants are welcome or are able to easily assimilate into local life, even assuming standards of living are attractive, which in the case of Greece is highly dependent upon one's perspective.

Cyprus has a much higher percentage of English speakers, loved our trip there and would consider it.

My sister and her husband is retiring in Vietnam, and they are loving it. Their monthly budget is 6K/month. She receives 4500/month in SS, and her husband receives 4600/month in SS. They live in a luxury apartment in Da Nang for $800/month. They also purchase Cadillac insurance for $1000/month. That leaves them around 4K/month for expense. Average salary for office worker in Vietnam is $500/month.

That sounds awesome! They are living high on the hog for only $6k a month! I heard pickle ball is really big in Vietnam and the food must be unbelievable. Good for them!

It is such a long trip to get there though. I want to retire abroad but somewhere close enough so friends can visit and my son will come.

Former expat here. I suggest trial running it for a year or two before you pull the trigger. Europe sounds amazing and it is until you have to actually Live in the society, with their version of customer service, and their version of community services, and with socialized medicine and all that comes with it, even with private medicine, the medicine may simply not be available in the country.
