The Only Moral Abortion, is My Abortion

Someone on social media directed me to this article today, and it had never occurred to me that anti choice activists would do this. I just thought they let these very pristine lives, being virgins until marriage, etc. It's interesting in reading the article how so many of the women think their need for an abortion is different than the other womens' need for one also. The cognitive dissonance looms large. Anyway, thought this viewpoint, though old, was interesting and others might find it interesting too.

I read this years ago and it is very powerful. Highly recommended reading for everyone.

Only the naive and the hateful are anti abortion rights. And I was one of those, several decades ago. I've never had an abortion but I would also never judge someone for getting one.

Any sane woman should recognize why another woman might need or want to terminate. And they also understand just how difficult such a decision would likely be. Moreover, they should realize that nobody can say for sure what they might do if put in a certain situation…because everything changes when you are actually the one forced to choose.

I know women who were rapidly anti-choice who quietly had an abortion or helped their daughter get one. (I’m talking about women who marched.)

I also know women who were very pro-choice who opted to NOT terminate when faced with awful medical conditions (think: baby will be delivered and die before leaving the hospital).

Like I said: you don’t know what you will do unless you are forced to choose…which should underscore the need for choices.

My catholic, deeply religious, anti-abortion rights best friend from high school got pregnant at 20 and had an abortion. I drove her and she made me promise not to tell anyone; she never told her parents. I seem to recall she believed she had some kind of moral high ground and got an exception because she was a believer. I always thought it was the worst form of moral cowardice.

My sister used to work for PP. She says you'd be amazed how many patients came in for an abortion and would be back protesting the clinic the next day. Always the same story that they had a uniquely moral reason.

FYI, many, or perhaps most, abortions, are performed on women in stable long-term relationships who cannot afford to have a child at that moment in time, in terms of family stability, employment, finances, etc.

Let's get rid of this notion that abortions are mostly utilized by promiscuous young women having flings right and left.

You were very naïve. Hopefully less so now.
