Bryan Kohberger Pled Guilty

Anonymous
Was I the only one looking forward to watching this trial and finding out why he did this? This is the Idaho student murders case.

Side note, it doesn’t seem like all the families okayed this. The Goncalves family (surprise, surprise) is already going on about how upset they are.

Rats. I thought he'd done it to prove that he could outwit prosecutors, and that he wanted the court fight.

The families don’t have to “okay” it. This is the prosecution’s call.

Why are they upset? Cause their vengeful bloodlust won’t be satisfied? As if Kohberger’s execution (if it ever would happen) would bring their child back, or serve “justice”?

This is a good outcome, rather that risk a mistrial or, worse, an acquittal.

Don’t worry, there’s a thing called jailhouse justice.

Chance he could get out early?

I’m not going to judge the family because I don’t know how I would react, but it’s probably better off this way. Avoids the inevitable media circus and having the defense attorney try to come up with some crazy defense.

I had no interest in hearing any more about these horrible murders.

The news is reporting no, I guess because he'd only be up for parole in 60+ years?

I understand how they feel, not easy to be rational in this situation. The fact that he gets to live, even in sh*tty circumstances, is hard to take when their kids don't. I hope he ends up in the worst prison. But this is a good outcome, and I'm pleased they'll be spared the trial.

Do you generally lack empathy for the parents of murdered children?

The deal calls for life without parole - LWOP. He will never be parole eligible.

This is a just result and a judicious use of taxpayer resources. Many people are just distracted by blood lust, but some are rational and don't realize that the death penalty is anywhere from 3-10x more expensive than keeping a prisoner incarcerated without parole for the duration of their natural life. https://ejusa.org/resource/wasteful-inefficient/

While in recent decades we have established many laws across the country that require prosecutors to consider the opinion of victims and for courts to hear victim impact statements at sentencings, we still entrust these decisions to prosecutors and courts because our system is not meant to be about vengeance, but justice - and justice must be tempered with mercy, and should be efficiently administered.

How is that lacking empathy for the families of the victims?

The whole reason we have a justice system, trials by jury, constitutional protections of individuals rights etc. is because we don't let angry mobs of victims' families lynch or otherwise execute the person they believe is guilty of harming or killing their loved one.

ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY FIVE EXONEREES WERE EXONERATED FROM DEATH ROW - and still counting.

Death is permanent, and a profoundly horrible thing for a civilized society to impose on a potentially innocent human being.

So now Kohlberger is potentially innocent?

WHOOPS - I haven't been keeping up on things. It is now TWO HUNDRED death row inmates who have been exonerated and released from death row since 1973.

There is no excuse for a civilized nation to impose the death penalty given the obvious extensive flaws in the criminal justice system. We have certainly executed innocent people in the USA, and we should really just quit having the DP altogether given how insanely expensive it is and that is has zero deterrent effect as decades of studies have clearly established. It's a waste of criminal justice resources which would be far better spent catching more criminals and preventing more crime.
