Upper Peninsula Michigan in fall?

Anonymous
We’ve never been and are considering a 4-5 trip in mid-October. Would fly in and rent a car. Any tips on places to visit and stay would be much appreciated! TIA.

We went in summer but really enjoyed it tacked on to a trip to sleeping bear dunes.

We did the pictured rocks boat tour, tahquamenom falls, and whitefish point, all of which we really enjoyed. It’s a beautiful area - these are all pretty far apart, FYI

PP again. I should clarify that snow is also very pleasant!

Seriously, OP, I envy you this trip. The UP is gorgeous at any time of year.

Exiled Michigander - it's likely to be cold or snow. And UP airports are notorious for 1) not having cars off season; 2) cancelling flights for "weather" (wind, light rain) and in the off-season you will have fewer flights per day, period. You could do a Northern Michigan/UP combine where you fly into Traverse City which has more cars, more flights, and fewer cancellations - in which case Traverse City, Charlevoix or Petoskey, St. Ignace and drive up to the Keweenaw/Porkies area. Or, you could fly into Marquette or Iron Mountain, and go to Copper Harbor, Houghton-Hancock, Munising. Some of the smaller towns in the UP might have weather or distance issues but are worth doing as standalone bucket list trips (Grand Marais, Isle Royale). Again, October is likely to be dark and chilly. You want to aim your trip between June to mid-September.

Late fall and early spring aren’t. I think many would agree.
