Mixed-age free style relay - NVSL

Is it allowed to have two swimmers in the same age group, 11-12 for example, in a mixed-age free style relay? The second 11-12 swimmer replaces a (slower) 13-14 swimmer in the relay order. Thanks.

No you cannot do that in the mixed age. You can age up in other relays but the mixed age is very specific about no age ups. You also cannot age up in any relay for division relay carnival.

I think a mixed gender medley next year could be very fun! 2 boys and 2 girls. One from each age group but teams can pick which stroke they do!

Why? It could be a lot of fun! Swim it right after the mixed age relays and have a rule that swimmers in mixed age can’t swim mixed gender. They can have the same warm ups as mixed age and would only add another 5-10 minutes to the meet.

DP but this has been a big success in both swimming and track at the Olympics -- there is a mixed gender 4x100 swim relay and a mixed gender 4x400 track relay (and there will also be a 4x100 track relay at the LA Olympics). Track requires each leg of the relay to be a specific gender (i.e. no mixed legs), with 2 male legs and 2 female legs. Swim allows teams to mix as they choose, with the only requirement being 2 male and 2 female swimmers.

The biggest practical hurdle I see to adding this to relay carnival is that you likely wouldn't get a team's best swimmers. It wouldn't be practical to have the same swimmers do the mixed age (same gender) relays and then do the mixed gender -- that's a lot of swimming for the younger kids and no one would want another break between mixed age and mixed gender (because no one wants to extend the length of the event any more than necessary).

We do some mixed gender relays in our league and the kids love it.

That would be cool. But NVSL is run be dinosaurs who hate change. Also full of teams that are the same.

Team Rep in NVSL and I would love to see a mixed gender relay. I think it would be really fun.
