How do I find a reading teacher for a child with autism and ID?

Anonymous
Any tips on where to find a reading tutor/teacher/program for a pre-reader? DS is well below grade level and significantly impacted by autism, so we are at the letter sound level but showing lots of interest. Need something outside of a traditional tutoring model - someone skilled in special education or experience with teaching reading to special needs children. Where should I look?

What area are you in? How old is your child?

Montgomery County but close to the DC line - and also close to PG County. Child just finished 3rd grade.

I think you will want a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT) preferably one with experience with kids with autism. I’d advise you to call ASDEC and talk it through and see if they can make a referral to the right CALT.

OP, I am the one who recommend you look for a CALT and call ASDEC. I think your child would benefit from a structured literacy approach designed for people with dyslexia, even if the phonological deficits of dyslexia aren’t your child’s main barrier. This is me: www.inventionreading.com and you can submit a contact so we can be in touch if you like. I don’t know that I am the right person to teach your child (I’m not yet certified) but I would be more than happy to be a sounding board and share what I know to help you navigate this. I know it can be lonely trying to find the right support.

I am a teacher and had a student tutored by them and made significant gains.
