Is it due to the heat wave or another issue? Was cool just two days ago and has been on all day and barely moved. |
The heat index was 115 today its still at 100 right now. If you have a heat pump hvac it usually can only cool 20 degrees cooler than the outside temperature. |
Get a window air conditioners or an air conditioners that sits on the floor (about the size of a suitcase) They have a hose that vents to the outside - easy to set up.Not too hard to insulate. Either will make a *huge* difference. Don't waste time thinking your whole house system, whatever it is, should work. If it's not working well enough, it just isn't. |
Used to live in TX and at a certain point you either live in a ranch house or admit that no amount of hvac zones can cool an upstairs once it’s past 100, especially if you’re in an older house retrofitted for air or a big house with illogical duct runs or high ceilings. |
Are your blinds and curtains open?
Sounds like you may need a new system. How old is it? |
To add, our house is 73 night/77 day. I'd prefer it cooler than that and I'm confident that our HVAC can get it cooler than our settings, but I don't want an overstressed system. It's not running non-stop and holding up just fine. |
Ours only cooled to 72 during the day, eventually cooled down during the night. 72 is fine downstairs, but feels very hot and stuffy upstairs. We need a mini-split, but can't afford it right now. |
I live in a 2018 house that was built cheap and crappy, and my upstairs hvac had no issues yesterday. So it must be about code for insulation and such? The upstairs HVAC is in an unheated attic. But it worked fine. |
Close all your curtains and blinds
Keep all the closet doors closed. |
Could be the AC, check your unit. The output may be not cool enough - could be coolant issue, or could be another issue with the unit and the heat and the added effort is showing the weaknesses. It is hot and requires the AC to work at extra effort, and if there are issues, it’ll show.
But also, as others mentioned, you need to help your AC, close shutters, add fans, etc. |
Our AC is 10 years old and cooled just fine to 75 yesterday. It was running a lot but not 24/7. It did run most of the night to cool to 70 (we are hot sleepers even with ceiling fans). |
If you have vinyl siding, there is not much you can do except maybe try to re-insulate.
|
My AC is 33 years old (yeah really) and it’s making me nervous. Temp set for 78/79 and so far it’s keeping up. |
I keep our house at 79-80 anyway, just to help save the planet and reduce emissions. 65% of our nation’s power grid is still sustained by carbon based fuels, either coal or natural gas.
I’m not some super-green environmentalist type, but I recognize what’s important. And if putting up with being a little warm in the summer is something I can do, then I’m doing it. It would be nice if everyone else who was so outspoken about saving the planet here would actually walk the walk, instead of just talking the talk - from their 70 degree McMansion. Pathetic hypocrites. |
What do you keep your heat set to in the winter? |
