I first noticed a bulging vein on my leg 2 years ago, at 56. I assumed this was my fate, as my mother’s legs are a roadmap of bulging veins. Aside from looking horrible, I didn’t notice any effects. That year, I took a 15 hour flight with no discomfort.
So I was surprised this week during a 9 hour flight, how uncomfortable I was in the leg with the vein - throbbing, aching, restlessness. Unfortunately, I was in a middle seat and couldn’t move much. I am still on our family holiday and after long walks, that leg is achy and feels tingly (pins and needles) even an hour or two later. My question, this is all normal for varicose veins, right? And has nothing to do with DVT? I know there is an increased risk of DVT when you have VV, but the symptoms seem to be different for DVT- swelling, warm to the touch etc The reason I ask is my husband is worried and wants me to go to a clinic, but we’re not in an area that has good medical care. And my instinct is, this is just another one of those aging pains. But thought I’d ask for insight from those with a history of VV. I did get some baby aspirin and compression socks for the flight home. Anything else I should consider? Also, is there a treatment that works to remove VV, and what doctor would you recommend in DC area? Thank you! |
You should consider that your husband may be right. I never got the swelling, warm to the touch thing, but had DVTs in multiple veins and almost the length of my leg.

Thank you for your response. What symptoms did you have, and what made you want to visit the doctor/hospital? |
I couldn't breathe because I ended up with a PE. My leg never hurt that much.
Where are you that doesn't have good medical care? |
Fiji- one of the smaller islands. I could potentially see a doctor once we return to the main island/Nadi. |
No it is NOT normal. It likely is a clot and you are at risk for a pulmonary embolism. My husband got one from huge bulgy veins that never hurt. Fortunately he survived.
He was on Eliquis after. You need medical attention. Compression socks and baby aspirin are not enough ino. If you live in DC area and make it back ok go see Dr. Mehru Sonde and get that vein ablated. They use RF and injections after ultrasound. |
Aging and perimenopause are reflex assumptions on DCUM it seems.
That's not your issue OP. Please let us know how it goes. When you get home call here https://centerforveindisease.com/ Dr. Sonde turned DH's painless but DVT seeding giant bulging VV leg into a safer and normal looking leg. No cutting, lol. |
I had DVT after a long flight. Only symptom was fatigue and calf pain. It wasn’t red, swollen or warm to the touch. Go to the doctor. |
I have had VV for years and travel a lot. Not normal! See a doctor before getting on another flight! |
