8 and unders

What’s your 8 and under situation this year? Man we’re struggling. Only 3 kids can do breaststroke and 2 of them can also do butterfly.

Some of them are off this weekend too. Should be fun!

My DD’s the assistant coach, but I have no idea. She says some of them frustrate her.

We have no boys legal in breast or fly. Two or three are kind of close-ish. Girls side is fine.

We went from having a deep bench of 8 and unders to only having 2 girls legal I. Fly and breast and no boys this year so far. Our first A meet we had no legal boys breaststrokers and one in fly from the other team who should have been dqed.

We have almost no 8 and unders legal in breaststroke or fly.

We've got a lot of 8us this year. Three boys who can swim breast and fly (the same three), but five girls who can swim breast and seven or eight who can swim fly.

Our summer coach runs a winter program that is supposed to focus on skill development, especially for the 8 and unders. Not sure how he failed to get our new crop legal but it’s BAD.

We have a large and talented crop. A few are kids of family swimmers and do winter swim so legal in all 4 and good dives. We have several 6 year olds who are already solid so another 2 years of them in this age group. It's so cyclical.

My 5yo just finished a breast legal but it takes him an entire minute.

Who cares?

I will say though. The vast majority of the swimming programs are really expensive many 3k a year.

Most events we left 1 or 2 empty lanes and couldn’t field an 8u relay.

That’s really good for 5. When my now 8 yr old first tried it they took almost 1:00 but then after that they dropped like 25 sec because they figured out how to actually race and stay legal.

Our team has enough kids legal in all strokes to cover the lineup. The same kids are top 3 in all strokes except breast, where one younger kid is clearly a natural breaststroker. A kid who is legal in all four is guaranteed to swim in an A meet because we only have 3-4 legal in breast and fly. Last year my kid could hardly get into the A meets at 7 despite being legal in all four strokes because there were a ton of 8 yr olds (now 9). So different from their sibling who swam fly at every A meet when they were 7 because only 3 of them could get legal all summer. It really depends on the team and the year.

We are definitely lacking in 8U boys and girls. We had a kid swim 36 secs at an A meet last year. We are a top division team.

Sounds like we’re in good company lol!
