Middle school grades in HS

How does Yorktown and W&L input middle school grades?

If MS-er has an A on HS level class, can it bring down HS GPA? If HS has A+ or other point system?

I heard that some kids don’t have their MS grade A on HS transcript because it brings average down.

I was told you had the choice whether to drop the MS grade in junior year of HS, ahead of college apps.

If a kid had Middle School “A” why would they drop it?

You have to make up the credit though.

I think my kid had a b in world geography and I’ll probably have him drop it

Some people drop because an unweighted A in middle school gives fewer points than an A in an AP class.

We didn’t do it though. I think colleges can figure this out.

That is true. At WL they are given the option towards the end of junior year. A ms class can be dropped unless it is something needed for grad requirements. My now college student was given the option to drop ms Spanish (had received a’s) b/c they had taken ALS in hs for 3+ years. It would have given a very slight bump up in gpa.

Request for Elimination of Middle School Course Grades/Credits from High School Transcript

Dear Students and Families,

Counselors have been meeting with students throughout the year to work on academic plans, review classes for next year, and make sure students are on track for graduation. During this meeting we discussed dropping Middle School grades. All students have the opportunity to drop middle school classes/grades from their transcript, but please note this only applies to middle school classes.

What happens when you drop middle school classes?
You remove the class from your transcript
You lose the grade
You lose the credit
You lose the SOL (if there is an SOL associated with that class. Ex, World Geography)
Essentially it disappears off of your transcript

Why do students choose to drop middle school grades?
They want to boost their GPA
They may have done poorly in a class and don’t want the grade on their transcript to bring down their GPA

How do I drop a middle school class?
Talk to your counselor and make sure you can (you may need the credits and/or SOLs)
Fill out and turn in a Middle School Drop Form (student, parent/guardian, and counselor need to sign this)
The middle school drop forms can be found in the counseling office
