During the meeting, the topic of immigration came up in an audience member's question. "If we don't have avenues for people to come here legally, to work or to build a home here, I'm going to be really crude right now, we're not going to have anybody around to wipe our asses," Balint said in the May 28 town hall meeting. "We don't have enough people in our country now to fill the jobs that we have right now." "In the last four months, President Trump has repeatedly wrongfully detained, deported, and disappeared people — an immoral violation of fundamental human rights," Balint said in the statement to NBC5 News. "He has made immigrants, regardless of status, feel unsafe and targeted all around the country. As Vermonters, we're so proud that we are seen as a safe place to land. I'm unwavering in my position that immigrants and refugees are welcome in Vermont and that every worker in every job deserves dignity and fair wages — from doctors and scientists to carpenters and farmworkers. I've relentlessly condemned the Trump administration's cruel practices targeting and separating immigrant families, and I will continue to stand up for the rights of every person in this country." Three days later, on June 5, in an interview with VTDigger, Balint apologized for the remark. She called it "sloppy and insensitive," the online news outlet reported. "I want to apologize to anyone who was hurt by my comments, and I want Vermonters to understand that my position hasn't changed," Balint told VTDigger. "It has been and always will be about protecting immigrants and fighting for dignity and fair wages for every single person in this country." What a terrible comment. Do you think her explanation was enough? I think characterizing immigrants as “ass wipers” is utterly shameful and disrespectful. |
Crude. But many people think of this when discussing immigrants. My immigrant spouse has a PhD and runs a company with 50 employees. In fact, half the immigrants I know hold PhDs. |
But this woman called illegal immigrants and legal immigrants “ass wipers.” That’s her take. And in her statement she said she hasn’t changed her position. |
It may be crude but it is true. How many women on DCUM have used illegal immigrants to be their underpaid and overworked, nannies/house maids!
One California farmer said even paying $17/,hr he could not find any UD citizen to help harvest his food crops. |
Reading is fundamental. Try harder. |
CA minimum wage for fast food workers is $20/hr. Why would anyone want to earn $3/hr less than a McDonald’s employee for significantly harder physical labor? It’s insulting that the farmer is implying they’re being generous with that wage. |
I don't see anything wrong with what she said, and she acknowledged that her statement was crude as she said it. She was ALSO talking about legal avenues, NOT ignoring underpaid work, and when she referred to wiping asses she was very clearly talking about nursing homes. |
Does no one on dcum have a parent in a rehab facility or an assisted living facility? Look around and who is doing all the hard work in these facilities. And unless you want to let your elderly parents or someone else's elderly parents to sit in a pile of crap, you better get ready to do some butt wiping yourself or find something that's willing to do this difficult job. |
If Trump or Vance said these words, the reaction would be vastly different. |
So let’s import poor brown women and underpay them to do a difficult job dealing with elderly people, the sick, and feces. I don’t know how this is something anyone would publicly admit to thinking. You are basically underpaying brown women for a hard job. |
I think that’s why illegals are not seen as a problem by democrats. |

Could you illuminate? |
No she didn't. And look up "figure of speech" when you have a minute. |
They are amazing and I paid all the women and men that helped my parents well. They also taught me a lot about how to do this care myself when I was on duty. You are not paying attention to how to make this work. Almost every facility I needed to use was understaffed. Come on down to help with toileting needs...you are needed. And you are correct that wages need to go up and workload needs to go down. |
What figure of speech was used? |
