Why I needed to cement into memory y=mx+b and also a^2 + b^2 = c^2.

Yep, I have those locked into memory, but do I know how to use them? The second, yes, but the first to find slope? Nope.

That's why I'm all for the new math that's being taught. The new math teaches the why and how instead of only focusing on rote memorization.

Because imagine my shock during my first year in college my math & science courses when every professor supplied a formula sheets during exams. "What's the use of having a formula memorized if you don't know how or when to use it?" is what my Physics professor always said.

I can still probably fill out a good 90% of the periodic table because that was a test during my honors chem class, but I can't tell you the differences in most of the groupings.
