Tips for low car rental rates?

Besides looking at airport locations and booking at the last minute which actually doesn't work out well.

I’ve gotten really good rates through Costco

If you are willing to rent a Tesla, they seem to be the least expensive to rent.

AAA gets good rates at Hertz.

Join AARP. You don’t have to be 55. I joined at 35. I use it for discount on car rentals exclusively and it pays for itself and more

Other techniques above (off-airport, AAA, Costco, etc), and once you book, enter the rental price here:

https://www.autoslash.com/track

The service will email you when it finds a lower price. Rinse, repeat. I have had rentals for a busy summer week start at $750 and go down incrementally and end up at $300.

Also, usually if you rent off-airport, you can return at the airport and it prices the same as returning to the original location. That way you only have to do the extra step once.

I’ve been using Sixt for a few years. I first started using them in Europe and their rates for cars like a BMW 5 series was very reasonable.

Costco seems to have the lowest rates.
Also book as soon as you can as the prices go up a lot if you wait. I learned that the hard way with a minivan rental in Hawaii!! I waited because I wasn’t sure if we were actually going and the price doubled. Would have been smarter to book and then cancel.

Sometimes they also go down so check periodically

Agree with Costco. I once made the mistake of booking the car together with the airline tickets and this is where I ended up waiting for almost 3 hours. Read the reviews, the 1 star ones are pretty accurate. After around 3 hours, in which my kids were sitting reading me these reviews out loud, I booked with Costco at a different location and got the hell out of there (after 3 hours I still had 20+ names ahead of me).

So no matter where you book, make sure to read reviews.

I also use Costco, although I don't think it's that much cheaper it's almost always the lowest because they display their price as all-in. No extra fees. Also nice because both my husband and I can drive without adding an extra driver.

But you specifically asked about lower cost, so I'll mention Turo. It's like the Airbnb of the rental car world. We've had good luck so far.
