Or only in 4th and 6th?
I cannot find any information about this. |
CES is only 4th and 5th grade and I believe entrance is only 4th grade.
There’s a separate magnet program for 6th grade |
If they were already on the waitlist and a spot opens up because someone drops out or moves, they may be invited for grade 5. It’s not common and it can be disruptive to go to a new school for just one year. Otherwise no, you can’t apply for fifth grade. Middle school magnets are a totally separate process. |
No. No spots are offered to fifth graders under any circumstances. |
These comments are incorrect. If a spot opens up (aka a 4th grade student chooses to exit the CES program), a spot opens up. Someone on the waitlist is offered the spot. It's definitely not common but it has happened. I'm a teacher at a CES school. |
I'm a parent and two kids joined for 5th grade at my child's CES |
Were they in the waitlist, do you know? We just moved to the area for fourth so never were considered in 3rd grade. I’m wondering what to do now as my child is complaining of boredom with the math. Supplement externally? |
They take kids in 5th grade if spots open up -- rare, but it does happen; one of DD's friends got an offer just before the start of 5th at CCES. |
CES is an ELA/social studies program, not math. Compacted math is available both at CES and in general-education programs. If your child isn't placed there you should ask. You can probably have your child evaluated now for placement on the CES waitlist, if your child is going into 4th. Contact DCCAPS. https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/schoolchoice/ |
Clearspring ES, in 5th grade there were 3 (possibly more) students who were not there in 4th grade. To note, around 3 people left the program after 4th grade so it's probably a waitlist. |
DP. Our experience was that moving here in 4th meant never being evaluated for CES. DC did get compacted math and ELA enrichment, but that was several years ago. I know offerings depend on school and change over time. We had to wait until 5th for DC to be included in the MS magnet process. |
Someone from DCCAPS said that the key to getting G&T instruction if you move is to let your new school district know that your child has been in a self contained gifted program. The only students who joined our CES in fifth grade were new to MCPS, so I’ve always wondered if they were already in a gifted program in their previous schools. |
This year kids were invited up until 1st quarter interims in 5th grade |
You are correct. Kids who coming into the district from a self-contained gifted program can be placed in CES in 5th grade. |
My kid was offered a CES spot for 5th grade in MID-AUGUST (i.e. 10 days before the school year started). He had been in the pool for 4th but didn't draw a spot.
(We declined. He wasn't interested in a new school for one year.) |
