Summer school meals

Anonymous
Meals are free again over the summer. We don’t really ‘need’ help with food costs, but our tax dollars are paying for this and we have three kids. Is it tacky if we pickup food from the school? They are doing twice a week handouts - 7 days of breakfast and lunch per child.

I would not make a special trip to the school to get food just because I paid for it.

Reminds me of my greedy ex who would get about 5 soda refills and one on the way out because he paid for it.

Can you volunteer at the school this summer to see the lay of the land, do extra outreach for those who might be needy but shy, take meals to families, and then grab some for your kids?

Pick it up if you will eat it. Not if you throw away. In programs like this it's always important to show that they are being used otherwise they get cancelled if only a few people need them as logistics costs seems too large for a small population served.

Yes taxes pay for it, but please keep in mind that they don’t prepare enough food for every student - or your tax bill would be much higher.

If your family is in the population that is targeted for this source of sustenance, great please get the food. If not, please make sure those in need get them first and then, if there are leftovers, I agree don’t let the food go to waste.

It is tacky to eat the garbage food they are handing out just because it is “free.” It’s mainly processed cheap packaged food. Unless your kids would literally be starving without it, no you don’t give that to your kid.

If by 3 kids you’re saying that feeding them is expensive and it would help to have free food, then yes, pick it up when you would use it. That’s what it’s there for.

Have you seen the school lunches? They’re awful. People only eat them because they’re “free”. Even the fruit is bad

I think this depends -

are the meals for any student regardless of family income/need?
will your children actually eat the food provided?
Is there an excess at your location? or would you be taking food from someone who needs it?

Our library was a pick up spot and we were given meals a couple of times because it was the end of the day. They had to be given away or thrown away.
