Has anyone been able to get out of it? We moved from out of state half way through DC’s sophomore year, so she will be 2 and 1/2 years with MCPS at graduation. She did not take physical education in her junior year and was told she is required to take it in the coming senior year. DC participates in sports outside of school, 3-4 hours daily on average. She is a nationally and internationally ranked athlete. She did not take any AP classes in 9th and 10th (it was not an option). DC feels really behind and could really use more room in her schedule for some core science and math classes. Academics aside, I can imagine her being exhausted. With daily P.E. she would be doing 5 hours of physical activity. Is there any hope of getting out of the P.E. requirement? |
Nope. She needs to take one credit of PE. |
I’ve never seen anyone get out of it. My kid was an internationally ranked athlete who practices 21 hours a week and had PE. There are lots of options and it’s not that exhausting if you don’t want it to be. |
Montgomery College equivalent credit over the summer? |
You can get a doctors note. |
Yoga is a good bet for not overdoing the athletics, although it doesn’t help with the academic piece.
Is there anything else your daughter would take senior year that could be done in summer school? Health & Tech requirements are popular options. If she has to take PE, 6 academic courses still leaves room for plenty senior year - English, math, science, history, world language plus an academic elective. What else does she want to fit in? |
I agree with yoga.
It’s only a two semester requirement. Lots of athletes don’t get out of it, I don’t think they’ll excuse your kid. |
No, and you are wrong to even ask.
Your kid is not special, not better than the other students. The majority of MCPS has harder schedules and they participated in PE> Have her take it over the summer if she doesn't want to take it senior year. Or have her stop after school activities. |
It sounds like a good idea if she is going to load up the other 6 periods. Might as well put a positive spin on it as I don’t think you’re getting out of it. Did she complete her health requirement? |
These are the graduation requirements that are applied to everyone.

You can take up to 2 online AP classes each semester for MCPS credit.
Take PE during the day and do the online AP at home. |
My kid has two medical conditions that restrict the physical exercise she can do, and still has to take PE. She chose yoga.
Your kid can take summer school for certain academic classes they would otherwise take during the year. Hurry up, the deadline is May 31 AND the counselor needs to actually enroll your kid, so you need time for them to do it: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/extendedhours/summerschool/central-high-school-summer-school-program/ This frees up time for PE during the year. |
Really? Do you have a link that explains this? |
NP- But kids can take OPTG (Online Pathways to Graduation) which has some AP classes, though not sure how many. They are asynchronous classes that require a once-a-week class that meets online for an hour. They are taught by county teachers, though taught is a stretch as they are asynchronous. My child did honors English, and not an AP class, so I don't have a lot of details about those classes. Overall, it was a very good experience and allowed my child to get his English credit to graduate early. As a PP said, kids can take 2 classes each semester. |
Did your kid take PE wherever they were before MCPS? |
