We (41F and 46M) are going to Hilton Head in early September. We haven't been there in quite awhile. Any suggestions on things to do, places to go, restaurants to try? We are staying in Coligny Beach.
Oh, and also input on weather that time of year. It should still be warm, and the ocean will hopefully be warm from warming up all summer, but is it going to be prone to rain around that time? Anything else you can add would be fabulous. Thank you! |
Probably the best time to go! Fewer if any jelly fish, water still warm, nights a cooler (relatively) than June-Aug. Its coastal so of course there's rain risk but usually an afternoon shower not a whole week washout. |
Char Bar has good burgers (and sushi) |
September is prime hurricane season. |
The risk to going this time of year is hurricanes and places being closed due to the off season. |
OP here...we are going the first weekend in September, and purposely going after most kids are back to school to avoid crowds.
I'm fine with the chances of a hurricane. Been traveling Sept-Nov to Caribbean during that time period for stated reasons for years, and not had a problem. Not to say it can't happen. But I'm comfortable with the risk. I was more asking about if it tends to be rainy or chilly. |
That is an interesting point, and one I considered. How much of Hilton Head essentially "shuts down" after labor day? We want to hangout at the beach and find a cool bar to grab drinks. Probably do a little sight seeing. Hopefully that's still available. I imagine it may just be like other locations and instead of being totally closed, their hours are just shorter. |
It is totally fine. We usually go in October and I've never been prevented from doing something that I wanted to do. |
Clearly not familiar with Hilton Head. |
We have a house there. Nothing really shuts down. There are a significant number of year round and split (weekend HHI, weekdays NY/DC/Boston/Atl/OH) residents there. Some places cut their hours back. And some may close 1 or 2 nights a week instead of operating 6 or 7 days. But it doesn't shut down. There is zero consistency with food or service on the island. You can have a great meal at a lot of places and then the next night go to the same place and have awful meal. Its a great time of year to go, the beach is great then still very warm and thinner crowds, less waiting for dinner. Feel free to ask any questions. The hurricane risk on HHI is really more about pine trees coming down than anything else. |
HHI has enough year round residents that nothing really shuts down. |
We've been going to HHI over Christmas time for decades. There was a time when a lot was shut down in late December, but since the 90s, there really isn't much of that. So there shouldn't be any problems in the fall.
We usually stay in Sea Pines which is right next to Coligny. A lot of our time is spent just kind of biking around on the paths to the Salty Dog, Harbor Town, and the Sea Pines Beach Club: eating, having drinks, goofing around on the beach. Pretty low key, but enjoyable. I don't think Sea Pines visitor gate passes are too terribly expensive. If you can get in, you are definitely close enough to bike to those places. |
Earlier September will still be pretty warm to hot. The weather usually changes by the 3 week. October is really nice. |
Some of the biggest hurricanes to hit SC have come at that time of year. Definitely get trip insurance, and my advice is to fly. Drove once and never again. |
If there is a hurricane on the east coast, the weather will be terrible and rainy, maybe not dangerous, but not fun. |
