Diet & Exercise Forum (aka the GLP-1 Forum)

Anonymous
Hi Jeff,

The Diet & Exercise Forum has become completely overwhelmed by discussion of obesity drugs. Given that obesity is a medical condition and these GLP-1 / semaglutides are drugs meant to treat that condition, I think those posts belong in the Health & Medicine Forum. That way the Diet & Exercise part of the site can focus on workouts and traditional weight loss.

I welcome any thoughts or feedback both from you and the rest of the community on this proposal. Thanks for all you do!

Discussion about GLP-1 medications and weight loss belong in the diet and exercise forum.

That forum isn’t “completely overwhelmed” by such posts, and you can easily scroll past them. You can also make non-GLP-1 threads if you wish.

The GLP-1 threads do get awful quite fast, but those of us participating need to just be better about reporting fat phobic comments and anything off topic.

My position has generally been that posters can choose to post in either the Diet or the Health forums and I continue to have that view.

I do agree, however, that there are too many GLP-1 threads. I have just locked a few of them. I have some observations about how to improve things. In my experience, the threads normally start with a reasonable question and elicit some reasonable responses. However, there will almost certainly be a response attacking the original poster for using drugs, accusing them of being lazy, and calling them fat. As a result, the original poster ends up being insulted both for being overweight and for trying to do something about it. Additionally, there will be posters complaining that another thread was started and posts questioning the motives of the original poster. Soon the thread will be bogged down in unhelpful posts and responses to those posts. As such, other posters are incentivized to start new threads rather than join a dumpster fire.

Therefore, if posters would report the unhelpful posts, I could eliminate them and, if necessary, block the posters. That will help threads stay on-topic and remain helpful. There will likely be less of a need to create new threads in that case. Moreover, if posters do create new threads, I can in good conscience, refer them to an earlier thread.

GPL convos should be banned.

I peek in on the diet and exercise forum occasionally, usually for exercise related content. Was off the forum for about 6 months and I agree: it's all weight loss drugs now. Blah!
