Why are people more sympathetic to Lindsay Clancy than Andrea Yates? (Child death mentioned)

If this many women empathize with Lindsay Clancy maybe they need to take a long hard look at their life and their own mental health. If you can relate to a mother who murdered her kids, and feel that you could do the same, you better never have children. If you already have kids and you feel this way, please leave now, just leave them with a trusted family member or friend until you can get it together, you have no place being around children. Pregnancy is hard, having a new baby is challenging, if you’re not a mentally sound person to begin with maybe decide to only have one child or stay child free, there’s nothing wrong with that. You will be much more content in the long run.

She wasn't postpartum when she did it, which means there was only typical background risk of her having been psychotic when she did it. The point being made here is that that is not the case for Lindsay Clancy. She has a history of symptoms, hospitalizations and medication that mean that she was at significantly higher than background risk of having been psychotic. We'll see what comes out in the trial.

Being postpartum doesn't give LC a free pass to murder her children. LC should be treated the same way the woman in Naperville was.

Being postpartum does not have any role here. Having postpartum mood disorder, which raises the odds that she experienced postpartum psychosis, does.

"Psychosis" is not just another word for any old mental health diagnosis. There are specific aspects of it that affect ability to understand right from wrong and conform conduct to law. That is a difference between it and garden variety PPD, PPA, etc.

She didn't have PPD or PPA, how can we make the leap that she had PPP?

She had anxiety after delivery that she had never had before. As an actual psychiatrist has explained in this thread, there are no formal DSM criteria for PPD/PPA; when the symptoms are activated (vs depressive) the closest fit is GAD. When it occurs within X time of delivery it is considered “postpartum.” You can read more about it here:

Many, many psychiatrists do not have the luxury of slavish adherence to diagnostic codes. As also discussed at length above by several professionals, many psychiatric problems are in the spaces between formal diagnostic criteria. It is very frequently the case that they pick the plausibly supported one the insurance company is likeliest to reimburse for.

I agree the prosecution needs to find motive here. If there’s something there - an affair, a pending divorce, etc. - they’ll have an easier time convincing a jury.

I think a lot of sympathizers of Lindsay are mothers that view what Lindsay did as incomprehensible. It is the last thing in the world that a mother would do to their own children and that's why they sympathize- knowing that no sane mother could do such a thing. You can't compare murdering random people to murdering your own children. Lindsay has no life going forward, she will have to live the rest of her days with what she did and also as a paraplegic- it really doesn't matter if she is in prison or at home- her life will be hell going forward.

I have been saying this from the beginning, was Jeffrey Dahmer mentally stable? Ted Bundy? What about most of the school shooters, were they all stable mentally? No, as a matter of fact many of them were also on psych meds, like Lindsay, but we crucified these young mentally ill kids. How about all the other potentially mentally ill mothers who killed their kids who are now serving life sentences in general pop prisons? What about them? We gotta stop with the #iamlindsay crap, no, no you are not. Like school shootings, we’re going to end up with copycat crimes thanks to the media coverage and the misplaced empathy. If we as a society have never related to, or empathized with murderers, even mentally ill ones, we aren’t going to start now. Hell no.

Jeffrey Dahmer was a serial killer who embalmed and disemboweled people and hid them in his freezer. He had a long history of asocial and frightening behavior. This woman was a highly esteemed labor nurse with no criminal record. Postpartum psychosis is real.

She murdered a baby. The fact that you’re holding her up as “but she’s not as bad as Dahmer!” would be laughable if it weren’t so disgusting.

I'm sorry, but PPD is not "disgusting." It's a devastating diagnosis and worlds away from Dahmer.

The people who actually know the person and the case are not claiming a PPD defense. Once again, more slowly for you, SHE SAW MULTIPLE DOCTORS AND HAS NO DIAGNOSIS OF PPD.
