English courses for credit

Anonymous
Has anyone had trouble getting English electives approved to satisfy 11th or 12th grade English credit?

The website list which courses should qualify yet were being told only the traditional grade level/honor courses or AP.

The website is crystal clear that only the classes listed under the grade levels count. It says it twice

How can you possibly read that as electives can be substituted for the grade level classes?

What is your goal? My child took 2 English classes this year in order to graduate a year early, so I can give you suggestions if that is your goal. But for the 4 required English classes, electives do not count.

Clearly that is not true because there is a version of AP Seminar that counts for 10th grade. Additionally students in the IB program get credit for the IB classes which are listed further down.

Further the graduation requirement states “4 credits of organized instruction in comprehension of literary and informational texts, writing, speaking and listening,
language, and literacy, of which 1 credit shall be aligned with the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) for English.”

Based on that why would a student not be able to take Media in Society and Culture in Literature. Not only do they cover the graduation requirement but seem really relevant given current times.

My student has already taken 2 APs for English and isn’t really interested in taking the third. They’d prefer to take the electives. It seems dumb to force this kid to now take Honors English 12, when the electives fulfill both the spirit and technical graduation requirements.

It sounds like your school sent your child on a weird path- or your child registered without thinking about the big 4-year picture. The AP’s are supposed to replace English 11 and 12, not 10. Why did your child not take English 10? Regardless, you should be able to determine which dual enrollment classes will fulfill the requirement if she does not want English 12. There should be a teacher in charge of the dual enrollment that should have that info.

The rules are the rules. If your child does not want to take English 12, they can take the AP course or a dual enrollment course. As others have said, electives do not count.

Since your child has already taken two AP classes, it sounds like they would be well prepared to take the third and that would be the best option.

As a sidenote, it doesn’t seem fair that some schools offer two AP English classes and others offer three. My child only had the option of two AP English classes. English 10 was boring and so basic.

There is a version of the AP Seminar that can be taken for English 10 credit.

Well prepared yes, but doesn’t desire to do so. And given the fact that the district has to pay for AP exams why would they want to force a kid into one when other options exist.

My point is that clearly the rules aren’t the rules or they aren’t clearly indicated as Dual Enrollment also counts for credit but that’s not mentioned anywhere on the page I linked to about English.

Why has MCPS decided only certain English classes count?

History graduation requirements specifies US, Gov, World. Science graduation requirement specifies a Life, Physical, and Earth/Space that is NGSS aligned. But English just says 4 credits with 1 credit being approved an English 10 course.

There is English 10: AP Seminar, which counts for English 10. But the regular AP Seminar does not.

OP - did you post just to whine or did you want to actually listen to people who are explaining?

The state sets the English requirements, not MCPS. Courses need to be either MCAP aligned or college equivalent. The MCPS standard grade level classes have approved by the state as MCAP aligned, electives are not. AP/IB/dual enrollment are all college equivalent. That’s the story.

If your kid doesn’t want to take AP Lit or Dual Enrollment, then it’s Honors English 12. Just suck it up and do it online in summer school to get the credit and then take the elective she wants during the year.

A) The state requirement is 1 credit must be aligned with MCAP of which for most it’s the English 10 as that is the assessment.

B) Many times you can’t take a course like Honors English 12 in Summer for original credit

C) Summer school courses cost
