Mold at Loeiderman

Look at the photos! So gross.

Sadly, this is common in so many MCPS buildings.

MCPS has no shame.

It not surprising. Many schools have these same issues. Glad they are speaking out.

What's shameful is that it hadn't been taken care of immediately when the facilities/building services people were notified of the problem. That they had to go to the press to get this dealt with by MCPS is disgraceful

The BOE needs to be held accountable as well as Taylor and his staff

TBD whether it actually gets dealt with. We need to keep up the pressure on MCPS or it'll be forgotten or swept under the rug.

Any photos or reports from the protest this morning?

The following unsigned email was sent to Loiederman parents in response to the event this morning:

"

We want to take a moment to provide important context following a recent article that implied there is currently mold in our building.

In August of 2024, before school began, we experienced mold growth on some surfaces, such as desks and chairs, due to a combination of extreme temperatures and humidity. As soon as this was identified, we immediately contacted the MCPS Indoor Air Quality team. A professional remediation team was dispatched to remove and dispose of any affected furniture, thoroughly disinfect and sanitize all surfaces, and conduct comprehensive air quality testing in every room. All air quality tests came back clear.

Since then, we have continued to work closely with the MCPS operations team to address heating and cooling issues in our building. MCPS has confirmed the full replacement of all HVAC units, with work scheduled to begin on June 18 and be completed by July 3. In the meantime, MCPS has offered to provide individual cooling units and dehumidifiers for any classrooms in need to ensure the continued safety of our staff and students.

The safety and well-being of the Loiederman community remains our highest priority, and we appreciate the ongoing support from our community. We look forward to our new HVAC units being installed in June."

Sadly this doesn’t surprise me. mCPS dragged their feet to give the “magnet” arts MS an actual place to perform, instead of just the normal cafeteria or gym stages like most MS have. The community is rather low income so they don’t advocate the same way that, say, Julius West does- and it clearly shows by how old that building is. They could have done a full renovation when adding the performance center on, but MCPS knew they could claim costs and thus only do the bare minimum. The school doesn’t need just a new HVAC- it need to be completely redone. More pressure on MCPS is needed to give the community the school it needs.

They had a really bad pta for years and the president and friends blocked anything anyone tried to do but them. Hopefully more caring and dedicated people are now doing it and actually advocating. It’s not a real magnet. Several of us pulled our kids from the music program as the music teacher was terrible. Many buildings are like this. Our school is and we have lots of parents who could advocate but do the absolute minimum but insist on holding the leadership positions.

This is alarming. I’m glad they removed and cleaned the mold…but nowhere in that statement do they confirm fixing the problem that causes the mold. Until that issue is addressed it will just continue to grow. I can’t imagine what everyone is breathing in everyday. This is unacceptable.

It is not unacceptable to the Board of Education and the Superintendent. They are all fine with it.
