My kid might have failed it. He says he didn’t remember anything on section 3 of the test. He is freaking out that he will have to retake Algebra 1 in school next year. Does anyone know anything? |
Best practice is retake the test after Alg 2 |
Whether or not you kid needs to retake Algebra 1 next year, I would sign him up for summer school. Algebra 1 is a foundational skill for both the next few years of math and the basic science classes. Weak Algebra skills will lead to multiple years of struggle in multiple classes. |
Anyone who has experienced this with their kids? My DS is good at math, Algebra 1 has been easy but somehow thinks he failed the MCAP. Says he forgot the stuff they did at the beginning of the year. |
I think you only have to take it, not pass it.
FWIW my kid said one part of the test was incredibly hard but the other sections were fine. Do they do experimental sections where they try to understand whether to include questions on the test? I remember that from taking the SAT back in the last millennium. |
That was true for a few years due to Covid, but I think they’ve returned to requiring students to pass it in order to graduate. |
You may just have to keep retaking it till you pass it. |
You just have to sit for the test. You no longer have to pass. See the 2029 requirements-

Isn’t this for 2025-2026 school year? My DS is in 7th grade. |
You know what's worse than retaking Algebra 1? Forgetting Algebra 1, then taking Geometry, then takimg Algebra 2 |
He has no idea what the curve is so it's unlikely to be able to predict failing. |
Is your DS in Algebra? If MCAP Algebra is hard for your 7th grader, he should probably I'll take Algebra 1 in 8th grade. Calculus is coming before you know it, and you don't want to be unprepared. |
Nothing happens currently since for graduation you only have to take the tests not pass it. Not sure if class of 2030 graduation requirements are published though.
However, do your your 7th grader a favor and have them retake Algebra if they are currently struggling with the content. MCPS will just happily move the kids along this accelerated path. Many of these kids end up really struggling with math in HS. Tons of 11th graders in calculus have tutors. |
Yes he is. He forgot a few things and there were questions they didn’t cover in Algebra 1 yet. He has gotten 💯 through out the school year. I don’t think he needs to retake Algebra 1. I honestly don’t think he did as bad as he says. He has never experienced not knowing math questions so he might just be freaking out because of that. |
