SAHM for only the summer

DD (my first baby) is supposed to be starting daycare soon at 6 months. I hate my job and want to quit and spend time with DD/delay daycare until the end of summer but am terrified at what that will do to my career. Will this ruin my chances of getting a job when I want to find new employment at the end of the summer? I’d be targeting employment at universities or within legal departments at pharmaceutical companies.

How senior are you? The job market is pretty tight so you might not be able to find a job that starts in three months. You could start applying now but would need to have a tight reason for leaving your job- they will ask if you are still there and might do a background check. Would you be ok financially if you can't work for another three months?

Senior jobs generally take longer to find.

will you have any child care at all? If you want to look at universities I’d assume you’d be interviewing over the summer before term starts. So you’ll need some care then.

People take “breaks” inbetween jobs all the time, so I don’t think it’s that bad. 2 month summer baby break and then back to work.

I did this somewhat and it took me over a year to find something once I was very actively looking - in a much better job market. I did some consulting in my skill set on the side during that year which was essential in showing I didn’t just have a “gap.”

Can you just take more unpaid leave and go back to work at the same place?
