Texas Republicans pass bill requiring solar power plants subsidize coal plants. It's DEI for black rocks.

How completely asinine. |
MAGA: "The gubmint shouldn't be picking winners and losers"
Also MAGA: "The gubmint has declared coal to be the winner and all others must bow down before the almighty coal heap" |
Wait, I thought they claimed that renewable energy cost consumers more money???? |
It wouldn't be a MAGA position if they didn't flip-flop. |
Command economy in action. Republicans are a bunch socialist. |
It is coal and natural gas plants that have to pick up the slack when solar and wind shut down. This causes problems for the grid. Having coal go on and off is less efficient, and might actually be increasing CO2 emissions. |
Then I guess coal and natural gas plants should lower their prices during the day to remain competitive. |
You have it the other way around. When natural gas is not available, wind and solar kick in. Texas has more clean energy than any other state b/c they need it for resiliency. |
Why does coal suddenly need subsidies after decades of not needing them? Is coal no longer cost effective or sustainable?
Yes, coal is no longer sustainable. |
The bill doesn't call for subsidies for coal power. It says the renewables have to provide continuous load. They can get a battery backup like Elon installed in Australia. They can do pumped hydro to have power available when the sun isn't shining, or run train cars up a hill and let gravity provide power. |
Good. I’m tired of taxes on oil, gas, and coal being used to prop up economically unviable solar and wind projects. It’s about damn time it went the other way too. Good for Texas. |
Everyone forget the freeze that caused blackouts a few years ago? |
Solar is very viable. Oil and gas is not propping up solar and wind. TX has more renewable energy than any other state for a reason. It's not because the politicians love it. It's because it's reliable and cheap. |
