Is it too hot and crowded in mid-August? Will already be in Europe and looking to go for a few days to an island resort that is not too insanely crowded. Is it worthwhile? We could also potentially go next spring but weather might not be warm enough to swim then, right? |
The islands are definitely warm but not as much as the mainland. Great site to get specific info.
https://weatherspark.com/ Most of the islands which have airports don't have flights to anywhere other than Athens- pretty sure only Mykonos/Santorini/Crete have flights to the rest of Europe. Definitely not warm enough to swim in March/April. |
Good luck in Aug!
But yes, summer swimming best. I'd look at islands that have less tourists or not go in Aug. I don't get what people go in Aug to Europe. You couldn't choose a worse month in summer. Or to Asia. You can get swag in June with weather and crowds but not Aug! We go as soon as the kids out of school! |
I think the best time for the Greek islands is September. Still warm and the water is a fantastic temp as well, but most people have left. Of course, if you have kids, this may be an impossible time to go. |
Best time for wildfires. |
Do NOT go to Athens in summer. It was already 27c in April and crowded. Air con is hit and miss and most sights are outside un shaded. If you go only for to the islands. |
Yes, just pick a smaller island. Or go to the Peloponnese coast. Where in Europe are you beforehand? Most of the smaller islands don't have airports so I would factor in flights/logistics when picking a spot. |
Yep. We normally vacation in late July or August because our teens prefer it but this year we are leaving June 14 - the day after the last day of school - because we are heading to Europe with them for the first time. They are both missing stuff (some grad parties, a camp they like) but it's one summer and I wanted to give us the best shot at crowds and weather (within the confines of summer.) |
