Why isn't Taylor pursuing this budget windfall?

As I was reading about this solar initiative at an Arkansas school that lead to a budget surplus which allowed a 15k teacher pay raise, I couldn't help but wonder why we don't do the same.

+1 Stuff in roofs can be pretty complex. However, I think there’s a real opportunity to add solar over parking lots. There are a couple of demos at some county facilities (Animal Shelter, police stations) and I think it would be a great use of existing land without increasing impermeable surfaces. I suspect it’s mainly a cash flow issue. When we installed solar 12 years ago, it was 7 years payback time to recoup the investment. But it’s been 5 years free electricity since, with many more in the future. |

| Look at what the county did at the Holiday Park Senior Center. They installed solar panels on top of the parking lot. Seems like this could be done easily at schools. |

Solar panels are not rocket science. They are everywhere these days. It's nuts that new schools and schools undergoing rebuild haven't been required to install solar panels for the last 25 years. I remember James Song refused to put them on Takoma Park MS when it was rebuilt. He didn't want to ruin "his" roof and couldn't be bothered to learn about what he didn't know. |

The thread was just worded in a way that places blame, rather than one that makes a suggestion for change. "Why isn't Taylor pursing this budget windfall?" Maybe he's never heard of it. "Do you think solar could be effective in MCPS to lower spending and redirect costs?" Maybe. Let's discuss. |

Oh I never have patience for "Maybe they've never heard of it." If you're in charge of one of the largest school districts in the nation, it's your job to research where other districts have found success. |

I would much rather that MCPS fix the hot mess that is Synergy/ParentVue/Canvas so I can monitor my kid’s performance rather than getting distracted by solar energy. |
