I have a 10yo who loves gymnastics, but we’re also considering adding a second sport for variety and cross-training. She doesn’t love the idea of team sports, but I feel like she needs to try something else. I’m curious, do any of your gymnasts also play another sport? Which one(s)? |
Swimming |
Dive team |
+1 for swimming and dive. I know a couple girls who transition from gymnastics to dive in HS. |
Swimming and diving?
Maybe track and field, tennis, or golf if she likes more solitary sports vs team ones like soccer, basketball, or softball. |
Stay away from competitive cheer. They love to grab up gymnasts, but every single gymnast from DD's gym who joined competitive cheer got terrible injuries from cheer. Cheer coaches don't seem knowledgeable enough in tumbling, so when they get a kid who can throw a bunch of skills, they lay it all on them. We went and watched DD's best friend because she wanted DD to join, and some of the tumbling passes that those kids were throwing were insane and unsafe.
DD has loved swimming. She tried diving but it wasn't for her. She loves that swimming is like gymnastics in that she can win as an individual and also have her scores count for her team (the club) to win as well. |
tae kwon do or another martial art. Her strength and flexibility will be a huge asset |
Track and field. People say (although I have no idea if it’s actually true) that gymnasts make good pole vaulters. |
Diving. A friend's daughter did gymnastics starting at age 5. The daughter switched to diving when she went to college. College diving coaches love kids trained in gymnastics. For her it was an easy transition - plus she received an athletic scholarship |
I will note that everyone is saying sports that are related, but OP are you looking for a sport where the skillset is very different?
If so I'm not sure you'll find one outside of a team sport. |
My 10y old gymnast also does swim. It is good core exercise for gymnastics. It is also low impact, which I appreciate to balance things out. |
My dd did equestrian vaulting (dance and gymnastics on a moving horse) from age 5 to 18. Then she switched to gymnastics in college! |
Ballet. It’s great for core strength and will also enhance her gymnastics. We learned that the ballet they get in gymnastics practice is not as good as real ballet in a ballet studio. My daughter’s balance beam and floor routines improved because of taking ballet.

Not necessarily! Just curious what other activities or sports gymnasts might do. Most of her friends are on team sports like soccer but she's shown little interest in those. She did tennis camp last summer and enjoyed that but hasn't played since. |
Women's wrestling is definitely becoming a thing...though don't know if is available everywhere and at what age.
Definitely continues to build core and muscle strength and endurance. |
