DD (who is currently in 7th grade at a public middle school) will most likely go to BCC for high school. However, I've heard that lockdowns there are not unusual. DD has anxiety about guns/shootings, and I don't want going to school to be like a nightmare for her. We are fortunate enough that we can consider (some) private high schools. BCC parents, do you feel that lockdowns are common and intense enough that it would be logical to look at private for this reason alone? |
Go private if you can. BCC is a shit show. |
I think the idea of a possible lockdown as a reason to look at private is silly. The reality is being in the USA she will have a lockdown at some point in her life. There is coded language bcc parents use when talking about some of the issues there & that might be what you’re hearing. My kid is a jr there. No im not happy about the lockdowns, and this year has been quite unusual. But she is happy there/I can’t afford to send her anywhere else. |
If you can afford to go private, I would, but like the PP, not for lockdowns. I’d look at private for small classroom sizes with more feedback and assistance on mastery of the subject.
Lock downs average once a year at this point. Twice school year was twice. I don’t like it but that’s not a major issue for me. |
Why does BCC have so many lockdowns despite being in a high SES area? |
It feels like each lockdown was a unique situation. There is more socioeconomic diversity at BCC, and the very wealthy families there are very vocal which seems to amplify events that have happen at other schools but you otherwise wouldn’t hear about. Also it is much closer to a more urban downtown and public transportation which brings its own set of complexity. |
It’s rare to find non snarky answers on here thanks for answering my question. |
The student population is actually quite diverse. My kids will attend BCC unless the reshuffling from Woodward affects us. I value the diversity, but I grew up in the more homogenous Churchill cluster… and this is a very different environment. My hope is that going to school with kids from such a range of backgrounds is useful later when they are out in the “real world.” We have met many great teachers and my kids have great friends. So far, so good. |
I have friends whose children attend down county high schools. It is a source of irritation that BCC lockdowns receive so much attention and theirs don’t |
+1 BCC had a FARMS (low income) population of 23% in 2023. Hard to compare it to say, Whitman, which has a FARMS population of less than 5% (not reported because the percentage is so low) or Churchill which is 9%. |
Hey! Me too! I also went to Churchill. I have one graduating B-CC and another who is a freshman. We have been very happy with the school overall, lockdowns aside. My senior has had amazing teachers this year and really for all four years and got a ton of support through the college process. My freshman is adjusted well and has her friends from middle school and has made new friends. I would not shy away from the school |
B-CC is a good school. It's a big, diverse population in an urban area so there's inevitably going to be fights, rumors of weapons etc. triggering "lockdowns" but they've kind of become like fire alarms, usually a false alarm and hasn't been an issue of late knock on wood. The school is predominantly wealthy, high-achieving kids going to good colleges, and it's a beautiful building from the outside and pretty nice on the inside too |
Hey! I’m glad to hear you’ve had a good experience. I have a kid in late elementary school at CCES and another one at Silver Creek. Chevy Chase Elementary has been absolutely the best. Middle School is ok. I think the teachers seem pretty great. My middle schooler gets good grades, but is not impressed with the teaching. I try to let that be - I don’t fully see what she is seeing. The friend groups have been great. - WCHS grad from above |
Lockdowns and shootings can happen anywhere. Don’t forget the DC private school shooting suspect that was an MCPS grad!

The disparity between B-CC and others is wild.
Wheaton has had 2 loaded guns on campus this year, and you barely heard anything about it. B-CC has a lockdown and this board starts getting active. |
