So Senior Parents are you happy with the college decisions? Did MoCo schools help or hurt them in the process? |
Ask in 3 years when thousands of MCPS grads end up back at Montgomery College. |
Ouch! But also not wrong. |
Why Montgomery college? Cheaper or free tuitions? Or failing grades? |
Failing grades. |
Me personally, my High School a ton of high GPA kids did not get into University of Maryland at College Park that would have got in prior to this year.
My daughter is going to an OOS school because of this. Her roommate amazingly is a girl the youngest of four whose three oldest siblings with to UMD at College Park and she did not get in and she had the highest GPA of the Four of them. My daughter had a higher GPA and SAT score her sister five years older who got into to UMD. I think MCPS in general in particular W schools did not prepare parents of the two factors, 2007 was a huge birth rate year and UMD being strict on limiting amount of kids per High School attending. Lot of parents scrambled last minute to pay for OOS schools due to this. Luckily 2009 was a low birth year rate due to financial crisis so parents of 10th graders will have it easier. It is what it is. But MCPS should have better prepared kids and parents that their 4.5/4.6 GPA kid most likely will be rejected from the in state flag ship and they need to plan. |
Yes. Maryland was brutal with college acceptances this year. If you didn't apply Early Action, you got decimated in the RD round. |
Yes. Maryland was brutal with college acceptances this year. If you didn't apply Early Action, you got decimated in the RD round. I've got a college junior and a college freshman, and applying to UMD early action (by 11/1) has been *for years* basically required in order to be considered for acceptance. Every HS counselor should be telling their students this. When my kid applied in 2021, she knew there was pretty much no point in applying RD. This is not new. |

My kid never saw his college counselor for meaningful college application advice. When he did meet with the counselor, it was usually to talk about fixing mistakes with his high school schedule. |

My DD didn’t really get college application advice by meeting with the counselor. But our school had tons of resources for kids and mine knew all of the important information by accessing those resources - including to apply to UMD by 11/1. I was happy with the college Process and outcome. My DD was able to identify schools that interested her within our budget. D had no issues completing applications to the schools she wanted. Transcripts got there on time. All around it was a pretty easy process and with the MCPS resources I was pretty much on the sideline with my main responsibility being to hand over my credit card. I am also happy with her pre college prep. She developed great study skills and learned a sport that will continue in college (tryouts completed and team roster announced already). I’m excited for her next steps. |

Everyone including my daughter knew to apply Early Action and they all did and tons of rejections. That strategy was useless for most in 2025. My daughter since she had higher GPA, higher SAT and more APs and clubs then her older sister who got in actually thought it was a saftey or slam dunk. Her HS a W school this year has a lot of kids going to OOS colleges as they scrambled last minute. My daughter's OOS college just today a friend at school said she is going. Her Dad was set on UMD and took him a few months to stomach paying OOS. And these kids were not wait listed, straight up rejected. You can schools that last year had 1-2 kids at now have 7-9 kids at. A lot are kids who would have went to UMD. It really blindsided a lot of parents. My daughter has a friend with a 4.7 GPA going to Montgomery Community College as did not get into UMD and plans to transfer in. Thats a kick in the pants. |

So UMD threw everyone for a loop this year. Our DS is also pushed OOS due to unexpected UMD rejection. |
I hear it is worse last year but it seemed to really get crazy last year with my dd's class. Everyone knew to apply by 11/1 but she and many other high stat kids were rejected.
If you come from the western side of MoCo, acceptance to UMD is very, very far from a sure thing. Our high school had a college counselor speak this past winter. He said same thing. It wasn't this bad even a few years ago so I don't know how MCPS could prepare parents. |
Never knew UMD is that competitive. What are other better 4 year college choices in Maryland if get rejected by UMD? |
