Poor American kids in Florida to take immigrant jobs

Beneath the smugness of Ron DeSantis, at Florida leading the nation in immigration enforcement lies something of a conundrum: how to fill the essential jobs of the scores of immigrant workers targeted for deportation.
The answer, according to Florida lawmakers, is the state’s schoolchildren, who as young as 14 could soon be allowed to work overnight shifts without a break – even on school nights.
A bill that progressed this week through the Republican-dominated state senate seeks to remove numerous existing protections for teenage workers, and allow them, in the Florida governor’s words, to step into the shoes of immigrants who supply Florida’s tourism and agriculture industries with “dirt cheap labor”.
“What’s wrong with expecting our young people to be working part-time now? That’s how it used to be when I was growing up,” DeSantis said at an immigration forum with Donald Trump’s “border czar”, Tom Homan, in Sarasota last week.
“Why do we say we need to import foreigners, even import them illegally, when teenagers used to work at these resorts, college students should be [doing] all this stuff.”

Seems like they are shifting exploitation from immigrants to American children and legalizing it. FLSA is still in effect though so some of this may be rolled back.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were the American citizen children of illegal immigrants that end up working those jobs.

That's inhumane.

This is like the draft that disproportionately affected poorer 17-25 year old males. Until the upper incomes want to send their teens to work overnight factory and farm jobs, they can stick it.

It's really too bad poorer communities in red states do not see the party for who they truly are.

My teen wanted to work over the summer, but foreign Eastern European temp workers took all the jobs.

Also, where are you located? Everywhere in FFX is advertising for lifeguards right now. Never met an “Eastern European temp worker” in that role…

There are a lot of teen/young adult temp workers from Europe and South America working at ski resorts. No matter which resorts you go to across the country, you will see this. I've seen it in Utah, Colorado, Pennsylvania, West VA, Virginia and Maryland while skiing. There is obviously a pipeline for these people. I'm sure there are other pockets of employment where foreign workers dominate. And these are not back breaking jobs. Surely American kids can hand out ski boots.
