Speaking of MacArthur High School - just FYI

…MacArthur High School, the newest (and soon to be among the best!) DCPS High School, is Hardy’s feeder by-right neighborhood high school. There is great stuff going on at MacArthur, including:

AP courses in: World History, US History, English Lang & Lit, Pre-Calc, BC Calc, Computer Science, Human Geography, Psychology, Environmental Science, and Capstone (research) Seminar

Multiple NAF Academies spanning Computer Science, IT, AeroSpace Engineering, and Finance

New cohort program focused on Foreign Service, starting in 9th grade

Brand new JROTC program (tip: looks great on college apps because it signals discipline and leadership - no military service required)

What are NAF Academies?

Nevermind I Googled it:

NAF academies are typically “schools within a school,” operating as smaller learning communities within larger high schools.

We are 5 blocks out of bounds, and missed that we could try to lottery in. Starting to think we'd much prefer it over J-R for our kid.

Maybe post lottery application? I don't really know how it works.

Not sure they still do it, but they used to have preference for JR students in the lottery.

I am glad you shared this info so people can explore - but I am aware of families who say that the hype does not match the product.

What languages are they offering now? DD didn't want to stop French, so we passed in the opening year

No AP languages

No AP sciences like bio, chem, physics

They are offering Italian and Spanish, the languages taught at Hardy. Presumably the school cohort (juniors?) will reach AP level this year or next, at which point they should offer the courses or exams depending on demand.

Come on. There are 2 full cohorts there, making AP classes mostly moot for the hard sciences and language. I know for a fact that AP Physics will be offered next year for my currently Sophomore son and that AP Bio and AP Chem will be offered before he graduates.

Does anyone have any idea whether French is
going to be added to the mix? We are at Hardy right now (inbound for both Hardy and MacArthur) and would very much like to see French offered…

It's interesting that they needed BC calculus before there was demand for AP science classes.

We were told no French. I think just Italian and Spanish. M kid has 3 years of French already from 6th - 8th. It's odd to not have French IMO.

Hard(y) pass.

MacArthur is a Title I school where 89% of students are below grade level in math and 64% are below grade level in English.
