DHMS Hosting Religious Event

Anonymous
DHMS is hosting an Iftar dinner to celebrate Ramadan next week. The event is being organized and advertised by school staff.

Who should I contact within APS to voice my concerns about the school hosting a religious event?

Probably not DCUM

Probably someone at Syphax. There’s a whole church that meets at Gunston on Sundays, you can complain about that while you’re at it. Let us know how it goes.

Schools should not be hosting religious events.

Schools can offer their buildings up to other organizations to host religious events.

But school staff should not be organizing and hosting religious events. Lots of Court rulings on this.

I’d contact the office of DEI because they aren’t offering Seders or Easter dinners to my knowledge. I sometimes get the feeling that we tiptoe around Muslims in APS

Good idea

NP. Surely you see the difference in a school building used by a religious group, and an event organized & advertised by a public school?

Check out the fairfax county schools forum here. Same thing was going to happen at a school there (Frost middle school), but apparently someone complained to the superintendent and the principal cancelled it.

Interesting. I’m glad that Fairfax put an end to this madness. Hope Arlington will do the same.

I can’t wait for the Seder and Easter dinner that are sure to follow.

Great! My school only explicitly acknowledges Muslim holidays
